How to: Change your domain nameservers (DNS servers)

This guide will show you how to edit your domain Nameservers (DNS Servers). Nameservers are used to point your domain name at your website hosting provider, DNS service provider (if not using our DNS), or possibly another email provider.  You are required to have a minimum of 2 nameservers assigned to each domain name.

NOTE: If you intend to use Hover's Connect feature for simple DNS setup, you must have your domain's nameservers pointed to ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com, in order for it to work.

Setting Your Nameservers to Point at Hover (in order to use Hover DNS)

If you need to point a domain name at Hover to use our DNS services, please perform the following steps:

  1. Log into your Hover account here: https://hover.com/signin

  2. Hover over Your Account, and then select Domains.

    save image

  3. You can Select the domain, and this will bring you to the Overview page.

    save image

Here you will see the Name Server section:

    Screen_Shot_2017-06-28_at_3.07.23_PM.png
  4. An edit window will appear showing your existing nameservers. You can replace these with the new name servers you wish to use and hit Save Nameservers.

    save image

Once saved, the changes can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate across the Internet.

As far as I understand if I want to point the domain harmonconsultancy.co.uk to the hosting server I just need to change the name server. Or, do I need extra steps? The site goes on and off, meaning sometimes I see the real site, and then 20 minutes later I see the Hover page with the message: "This user has not enabled any redirections." Hope you can help.

Hey Garfield, it can be a nameserver change or the addition of an A record/CNAME record to point to your hosting provider. In any case, the reason why you're seeing the bounce is due to propagation. It can take up to 24 hours for nameserver changes to take full effect. You should now only see your active website when visiting harmonconsultancy.co.uk, not the Hover default landing page. If you are still seeing the Hover page, then it may benefit you to clear your browser cache and cookies. If you still have any issues, give us a call (1-866-731-6556, Mon-Fri 8am-8pm EST) or send us an email at help@hover.com.

Help - I changed my name server before I downloaded content from my website - how do I change it back?

    Hi John,

You can change the name server back the same way you changed it the first time: 1) under the Name Servers tab in your account, or 2) under the "Domain "Details" of the domain.  You'll have to contact your website hosting provider though if you need to recover any lost website data or if you don't remember what servers your domain was pointing to prior to this change.

Hello, I've recently purchased a "forward only" e-mail account with Hover.  When I send a test e-mail from G-Mail to the e-mail address I've just set up, I get the following message bouncing back.  Any suggestions?

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

          ryan@ryanhofrichter.com

    Technical details of permanent failure:

Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain ryanhofrichter.com by mail.ryanhofrichter.com. [199.188.206.114].

The error that the other server returned was:

    550 No Such User Here

    Hi Ryan,

In order to use our email services, you will need to update your mail exchange(MX) record with your name server provider to point back to us.  Please modify your MX record as follows:

    Host:@

    Type: MX

    Priority: 10

    Destination: mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.com

Shortly after the record is modified, the forwarding services you purchased will function.  If you require any additional assistance, please let us know.

I wish at the TOP of this article it would mention this link:

    https://www.hover.com/nameservers

...for those of us with multiple domain names transferred to Hover, it would have saved lots of time to know about that link first, and the Bulk Edit feature.

Hi, I'm trying to change my nameservers to dns.home.pl and dns2.home.pl but after few moments they automatically change back to hover's nameservers. I followed all the instructions. Any suggestions please?

    Hi Konrad,

This occurs with a small number of TLDs. In these cases, it can take up to 5 days for the registry to validate the nameservers set on the domain name. If you check the status of the domain through a Whois look-up, you'll see 'pending update' which means that your domain has a pending nameserver change. Your old nameservers will continue to be used until this validation completes.

Give it 5 days from the last change and if it still doesn't update give us a shout or shoot us an email at help@hover.com.

    Hi Joel

Thanks for your reply. On the 24th I updated nameservers to dns.home.pl, dns2.home.pl, dns3.home.pl. The nameservers changed to hover's nameservers after few minutes at https://www.hover.com/nameservers . Ive waited 5 days since 24th, checked the status through a Whois and now the status changed from 'pending update' to 'ok' but the nameservers still are ns2.hover.com | ns1.hover.com
    Please help.

    Joel,

I solved the problem by re-entering the nameservers once again after the 5 day period, then waiting another 30 hours. the problem was probably connected with IT domain.

    Thanks for help.

Hi, I'm having url issue, if I write http://youtrail.com/ without www I get a hover page. I have a CNAME record for www, but it does not work: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0a236gtp38

Any tip how to solve this?

    Hi Giorgio,

For a solution on our end, you'd need to use the "Forward This Domain" option under the "Domain Details" tab, and redirect traffic to http://www.youtrail.com. Google also has an option to enable, and redirect, the "naked" or root domain. Please see the link below.

    https://support.google.com/a/answer/2518373

If you have any trouble with this please feel free to give us a shout or shoot us an email.

    Hi L ui,

By the sounds of it, we may need to add those name servers to all foreign registries for you.  That's not a problem and only takes a moment.  Can you email use the name servers at help@hover.com?  We'll keep an eye out for it and get those added right away for you.

If you mean update the name servers provided by your hosting company then the instructions are listed in this article.  If we are misunderstanding your request, please shoot us an email at help@hover.com and we will have a look.

    Hi Ashleigh,

When you make changes to your name servers the changes may not take effect for up to 24-48 hours.  There needs to be some time for the changes to propagate across the internet.  I just had a look myself, and I do see your website up now.  Are you still not seeing the correct page showing?  If so, try clearing the cache on your computer.  If you're still not seeing your page, give it a little bit more time.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
