How to: Change your domain nameservers (DNS servers)

This guide will show you how to edit your domain Nameservers (DNS Servers). Nameservers are used to point your domain name at your website hosting provider, DNS service provider (if not using our DNS), or possibly another email provider.  You are required to have a minimum of 2 nameservers assigned to each domain name.

NOTE: If you intend to use Hover's Connect feature for simple DNS setup, you must have your domain's nameservers pointed to ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com, in order for it to work.

Setting Your Nameservers to Point at Hover (in order to use Hover DNS)

If you need to point a domain name at Hover to use our DNS services, please perform the following steps:

  1. Log into your Hover account here: https://hover.com/signin

  2. Hover over Your Account, and then select Domains.

    save image

  3. You can Select the domain, and this will bring you to the Overview page.

    save image

Here you will see the Name Server section:

    Screen_Shot_2017-06-28_at_3.07.23_PM.png
  4. An edit window will appear showing your existing nameservers. You can replace these with the new name servers you wish to use and hit Save Nameservers.

    save image

Once saved, the changes can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate across the Internet.

Hi, I'm trying to change my nameservers to dns.home.pl and dns2.home.pl but after few moments they automatically change back to hover's nameservers. I followed all the instructions. Any suggestions please?

    Hi Poulami,

I've gone ahead fixed this for. So you know, the only change I had to make setting it so utsav-collections.com forwards to www.utsav-collections.com (which was already pointing at Shopify).

I hope that helps, and good luck putting your store together!

Hi Allison - Hover domain names can be used with any web hosting service.  You would need to edit your DNS records in Hover to point at iWeb.  Click here for our tutorial on editing DNS records.

MobileMe has been closed by Apple so I suggest verifying with Apple that you can still set up a new domain on iWeb. Please give us a call or send us an email for one on one help with configuring your domain name's DNS or answering more specific questions.

Here are some FAQs about iWeb being discontinued that may help:

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for reaching out about this.

That error can occur when they are entered in all caps. If you try entering them lower case, it should except them:

    ns1.wordpress.com

    ns2.wordpress.com

    ns3.wordpress.com

    Thanks!

This is a noob question but please bear with me:

Following the instructions: I literally typed the words "nameservers" into the Nameserver 1 and Nameserver 2 boxes.

I received an error code when I tried to save.

Then i changed the text to "ns1.hover.com" for the first box and "ns2.hover.com" for the second box.

Have I done the right thing?

The name servers will need to be added to the various Registries. We can do that for you, so I'll send you an email shortly to get the name servers from you.

Hi Tyson, is there any way to completely disable the default page that says "This user has not enabled any redirection"? I rather not have my domain show any page if I don't have a home for it. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I've got this bizarre situation going on. So I've set my domains with Mammoth's webserver's and the way it works is that I can't put "www." in front of my domain, it will only work without it.

    What could this possibly mean?

    Hi Anne,

When transferring in a domain name, we can certainly help you to set up DNS records in a zone file within your account prior to initiating the transfer.  That way, you can just set the Hover nameservers through your current provider to prevent any downtime.  We normally do this internally when doing a Valet domain transfer as well.

However, if you are using third-party nameservers to manage your DNS records rather than the nameservers provided to you by your current domain registrar, you don't need to worry about copying any DNS records.  The nameservers for your domain will not be updated during the transfer process.

I am surprised to hear that you were told to do it yourself when inquiring about our Valet transfer service though.  I'm sending you an email from help@hover.com to inquire about your transfer and see if I may be of assistance.

Hi Luis - you could simply forward your domain name to another website (or another domain name you own).  For a completely blank website, here's a trick:  create a stealth redirection to http://www.google.com (Google won't display when loaded in a stealth frame so you'll see a completely blank page).

    Here's our forwarding tutorial:  https://help.hover.com/entries/21196383-how-to-forward-your-domain-name

I wish at the TOP of this article it would mention this link:

    https://www.hover.com/nameservers

...for those of us with multiple domain names transferred to Hover, it would have saved lots of time to know about that link first, and the Bulk Edit feature.

Totally agree with Anne York. Avoidable outages make everyone look like amateurs. My "valet" requested that I change IPS-TAG and name servers which in trust I duly did but am now kicking myself for not verifying that hover's DNS was ready. The DNS entries (which had been supplied to the valet previously) haven't yet been added by Hover so outage results. Hugely disappointing. Would be great to allow customers to be able to set up DNS in advance of transfer and perhaps save Hover technical support requests at the same time.

I changed my name servers as well and my site is now showing fine, but my email seems to be broken and does not seem to be going through Hover. Is there a way to point my DNS for my website but keep my email hosted at hover?

    Hi Hover Help Center,

Same with Magary.... an instuction from aws referring to Route 53:

"Before you switch to Amazon Route 53 as your DNS provider, you must transfer any remaining DNS records from your current DNS provider, including MX records, CNAME records, and A records, to Amazon Route 53. "

My MX record is actually set up by google apps and hover, should I transfer it all to Route 53? Thanks.

    Hi L ui,

By the sounds of it, we may need to add those name servers to all foreign registries for you.  That's not a problem and only takes a moment.  Can you email use the name servers at help@hover.com?  We'll keep an eye out for it and get those added right away for you.

Hi Aaron, you can absolutely keep Hover email when using third-party name servers. Just provide your current host with our MX records.

    • Record Type: MX
    • Host: @
    • Value/Target: mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.com
    • Priority: 10

Hello, I'm getting the same error every time I add a new domain at Hover and try to set nameservers:

Nameserver [ns1.mediciuniversity.co.uk] doesn't exist at the registry (Code 480)

Last time I was told my ns1 & ns2 nameservers needed to be added to your registry. But now I've got 6 other domains already using those nameservers and you still won't let me use them on the new, blaylock.nl domain.

    Thank you!

    Hi Mark,

That's correct.  When you update name servers anywhere, not just Hover, it can take 24-48 hours for the name server changes to propagate across the internet.  This isn't something that can be controlled, it's just the approximate time it takes for name server changes to take effect.

Let us know if you have any other issue or need help with anything else.

REGARDING: domain registry (.com, .net, .tv, for example) doesn't recognize the name server

@Henry Abey, Brennan Valenzuela  - PLEASE ADD MY HOSTING SERVER NOW: ( www.webmedia.sg) or (ns1/2.webmedia.sg)

    Hover Help Cente

I HEARD THIS IS A SCAM, IS HOVER A SCAM TRYING TO SELL THEIR HOSTING PACKAGE?

    THANK YOU AND REGARDS
