How to: Change your domain nameservers (DNS servers)

This guide will show you how to edit your domain Nameservers (DNS Servers). Nameservers are used to point your domain name at your website hosting provider, DNS service provider (if not using our DNS), or possibly another email provider.  You are required to have a minimum of 2 nameservers assigned to each domain name.

NOTE: If you intend to use Hover's Connect feature for simple DNS setup, you must have your domain's nameservers pointed to ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com, in order for it to work.

Setting Your Nameservers to Point at Hover (in order to use Hover DNS)

If you need to point a domain name at Hover to use our DNS services, please perform the following steps:

  1. Log into your Hover account here: https://hover.com/signin

  2. Hover over Your Account, and then select Domains.

    save image

  3. You can Select the domain, and this will bring you to the Overview page.

    save image

Here you will see the Name Server section:

    Screen_Shot_2017-06-28_at_3.07.23_PM.png
  4. An edit window will appear showing your existing nameservers. You can replace these with the new name servers you wish to use and hit Save Nameservers.

    save image

Once saved, the changes can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate across the Internet.

Each time we try to add a nameserver, we get the message: "you must at least provide 2 nameservers" and we cannot proceed!

Roberto, there was something odd with your account, but it was re-synced and should be resolved now, so can you try it again? Let us know if you're still having trouble though.

Sasha, updating name servers can take up to 48 hours before you see it propagate on the web. If you still don't see anything resolve after that time, you should give Powweb a call.

The name servers will need to be added to the various Registries. We can do that for you, so I'll send you an email shortly to get the name servers from you.

I changed my name servers as well and my site is now showing fine, but my email seems to be broken and does not seem to be going through Hover. Is there a way to point my DNS for my website but keep my email hosted at hover?

Hi Aaron, you can absolutely keep Hover email when using third-party name servers. Just provide your current host with our MX records.

    • Record Type: MX
    • Host: @
    • Value/Target: mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.com
    • Priority: 10

I am trying to use Amazon's Route 53 as my DNS. I think I configured the Amazon end correctly but it is not resolving. The domain is lisamagary.com. I don't want to forward the domain because it is messing up the <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width"> tag and causing it to not scale properly on iOS browsers.

My question is have I properly completed the following step from the Route 53 instructions?

"Before you switch to Amazon Route 53 as your DNS provider, you must transfer any remaining DNS records from your current DNS provider, including MX records, CNAME records, and A records, to Amazon Route 53. "

How do I transfer those from Hover? I tried to do so but my have done it wrong.

It looks like you've pointed the lisamagary.com domain at the following name servers:

    ns-1125.awsdns-12.org | ns-1686.awsdns-18.co.uk | ns-417.awsdns-52.com | ns-874.awsdns-45.net

If those are the name servers that Amazon gave you then you did it correctly. Keep in mind it can take up to 48 hours for the name server changes to propagate fully and be recognized across the Internet.

    Hi Hover Help Center,

Same with Magary.... an instuction from aws referring to Route 53:

"Before you switch to Amazon Route 53 as your DNS provider, you must transfer any remaining DNS records from your current DNS provider, including MX records, CNAME records, and A records, to Amazon Route 53. "

My MX record is actually set up by google apps and hover, should I transfer it all to Route 53? Thanks.

Hi, I have signed up and registered my domain name, but when I try to update the nameservers to point to my hosted server I get the following message/error:

Registry error, domain's nameservers not updated Request to modify domain smarthings.co.nz failed in RA: domain status does not allow for operation: The current domain status does not allow the requestedoperation.Domain status:clientTransferProhibited, clientUpdateProhibited, clientDeleteProhibited: nrc=502007

What am I missing here? I have paid the $25 for the domain name, but as of now I am unable to use it.

    Kind regards,

    Ben

    Hello,

Changed our Name Servers over to: ns1.leagueathletics.com and ns2.leagueathletics.com. I also notified LeagueAthletics to update things on their end a couple days ago. Based on your previous posts, I'm afraid I just have to wait for 2 days?! Just making sure there's not something else I can do to speed this up.  Our little league online registration is unfortunately on hold for as long as it takes to "propagate".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Respectfully,

    Scott

    Hi Michie,

As per their instructions, yes, you'll need to copy over all your current DNS records from your Hover DNS zone file so it's updated on your Amazon name servers.  You don't have to worry about that "mail" CNAME record, as that's just one of our defaults. You're not using Hover email so it doesn't matter.

Let us know if you have any trouble with this.

    Hi Ben,

Looks like you have an open help request with one of our customer service advisors already, and they're in the process of getting this looked after for you.  You can continue to get help through that email correspondence with them.

    Hi Mark,

That's correct.  When you update name servers anywhere, not just Hover, it can take 24-48 hours for the name server changes to propagate across the internet.  This isn't something that can be controlled, it's just the approximate time it takes for name server changes to take effect.

Let us know if you have any other issue or need help with anything else.

I recently changed webhosts, and so of course I had to change nameservers to reflect this. I encountered the error, "Nameserver does not exist at the registry (code: 480)", to which I found this page, and read through the other comments by other people who have encountered this problem.

On a whim, before submitting a help desk ticket to have my domains' nameservers manually changed, I played with a couple domains I wasn't using for anything important, to see if I could fix this.

https://www.hover.com/nameservers - on this page, hovering over each domain name, there was an option to "revert to hover default". Once that change occurred, I was then able to input the appropriate nameservers for my new webhost.

I thought the info might help others who come across this rather strange problem, and to make hover.com aware of the behavior, there might be something that can be tweaked to make the practice of changing nameservers a little less confusing. :)

Hi. I've changed my domain's nameservers to point to AWS instead of bluehost. A couple of hours later it looked as if the change had occurred (I'm migrating to a different look and feel at the same time, so it was obvious) Then, less than an hour later, the domain seemed to point itself back to my old hosting service.  Can you help me figure this out?

    Hi Alexandra,

I was able to find your account and can see which domain had the changes made to it.  As long as you're pointing your domain to those servers, that's all that needs to be done on our side.  Is there any possibility that the DNS on those AWS servers is not correct, or possible changed?  If you don't see the new website loading withing 48 hours of the name server changes, please check to be sure the servers are correct, then give your hosting provider a quick call to make sure everything on their end is set up and configured correctly.  If you still have any issues, give us a call (1-866-731-6556, Mon-Fri 8am-8pm EST) or send us an email at help@hover.com.  We'll see if there's anything further we can help with on our side.
