How do I renew my Hover services?

This tutorial will show you how to renew your existing registered domain names and personalized email addresses.

Renewing your registered domain name

To renew a domain name

1. Sign in to your Hover account HERE.

2. Do one of the following:

  • If you have more than one domain name in your account and you just want to renew one, mouse over the domain name and click Renew.
  • If you wish to renew multiple domains at once, see below for Bulk Renewal options.

From the drop-down list, choose the number of years for which you want to renew, and then click Confirm.

  • If you have only one domain name in your account, you will be taken directly to your Domain Details page. Click Renew.

In the Shopping Cart, select the number of years for which you want to renew (and add mailboxes if you want), and then click Secure Checkout.

3. By default the existing payment method on your account will display. Click Edit to change your preferred payment method. Credit card and PayPal are your options.

If you select PayPal, a pop-up window appears that allows you to sign in to PayPal and verify the payment.
Click HERE for additional help using Paypal.

If you wish to use the existing credit card on file, make no changes.

4. If you are paying by a different credit card, enter the new billing information, scroll down, and then click Continue.

Note:  The billing address must match exactly what your bank has on file for the credit card you're using.

5. Put a check next to I have read and agree to the Terms of Service and then click Purchase Now to finalize the transaction.

What about mailing an international money order? I have done that in the past because I am reluctant to do online electronic transactions. I had my identity stolen once and I do not want to risk it again.

Please include this renewal option's explanation in your help section.

We only accept electronic forms of payment at this time.  To prevent online fraud and prevent people from using our service to register phishing websites, we need to verify all transactions.  We do not accept anonymous forms of payment.  We are part of Tucows, a publicly listed company in Canada, and we take strong precautions to protect the privacy of your information.

It appears that we now have no choice but to accept Hover's FORCED "Auto-Renewal" policy or cancel the domain? Many of us prefer to manually renew our domains. Personally, I'm disabled and on a fixed income. I prefer to renew my domains manually. With Hover's recent price increases, it doesn't seem like it's a very good idea to piss off customers right now. There are a number of registrars out there that charge less and don't automatically assume I want mailboxes, DNS, etc. While it will be a hassle to transfer all of my registrations, it wouldn't be too much more work than manually renewing them.

I'm also not particularly happy that you automatically entered incorrect DNS information and nameservers. I have a hosting service and my nameservers were already set up. I just happened to notice that you decided to automatically change the nameservers I had listed and create DNS records.

So, my main questions is, how do I opt out of "Auto-Renewal", so that I can renew domains manually when I know I have enough money to cover them?

You can manually renew your domain names at any time before expiration to add additional years to an existing registration term.  The Hover system renews active domain names only if they are not renewed manually before expiration.  If you have a domain name that you do not want to keep, then you will need to cancel it before the next billing date.  Click here for instructions on how to cancel a domain name.

You will receive up to 7 email notices before services are renewed by the Hover system.  Click here to view instructions on how to set your renewal reminder preferences.  The renewal reminders are sent to the primary email contact listed on the settings page.

A domain name's name servers are reset on expiration.  This points expired domain names to a landing page indicating that the domain name has  expired.  This provides an additional reminder to the domain owner that they need to renew the domain name if they want to keep it.  We have a 40 day grace period for expired generic top-level domains, such as .com and .net for example.  Please note that the DNS records under the DNS tab in Hover have no effect on your domain name if it is not pointed at Hover's name servers.

We have not increased our regular prices since we launched Hover in 2009.  We charge $15 per year for registering and renewing most top-level domains.  Details are available on http://hover.com/pricing.  Some customers came to Hover with grandfathered pricing plans from previous service providers.  The domain registries regularly increase their fees to domain registrars and we have increased renewal rates in some of those grandfathered plans in response to higher registry costs.

Is it possible to renew without the 6 additional email accounts that I do NOT want?

@William - a member of our customer service team can remove the email addresses from your service so you can renew the domain only.  I see you sent us a support ticket already and I'll make sure that is taken care of for you.

I don't want to renew my mailboxes; they add $45 to the exchange, and I already host my email somewhere else, but it doesn't seem like there's a way to get rid of them

I don't use my hover mail much, but the rest of the family does. Today our account closed since I didn't check my inbox - and didn't notice the warnings that might have been sent to me. How can we get our account reopened asap???

I see that you have managed to log into your account or use our quick renewal at http://www.hover.com/renew to process the renewal of your email addresses. I see that the account is now showing active and you will now be able to access all of your email accounts.

    Hi Marcel,

You can select the number of years you wish to renew your services when you go through the renewal process.  You will see a column on the check out page for "term".  Here you can choose the number of years.  You can renew up to a total of 10 years.  If you have any trouble renewing please feel free to contact us, and we can help.

Hi Katrin - I just checked our site and I am still seeing the option to add multiple years.  You have to move your mouse over the line in the order to see the options appear, however if you're still not seeing it, I have opened a help request for you with a bit more detail, ticket #619485.

I have also attached an image here so you can see what I see when I hover my mouse over the order.

Let me know if you still need help with this.  We can converse over that ticket I sent you.

Hello--your main renewal page mentions increasing discounts for longer renewal periods, yet when I go to the pricing page, the renewal price is (15 x no. years). Is there a discount for renewals or not?

    Thanks!

    Hi Michael,

You are right, the renewal page does mention multiple year renewal discounts, however our system has not yet been set up to automatically apply those.  Give us a call and we'll see if we can work something out for you.  You can call our toll free number 1-866-731-6556 Mon-Fri between 8am-8pm.

It can actually take a few hours to process in our system before it renews. I'm going to send you a quick email to discuss it though.

    Hi Piotr,

I see Tara sent you an email explaining how to renew your domain. Along with the steps she provided, (and that are also listed in this article), you can also renew your domain at https://www.hover.com/renew

I thought you were planning on adding an option so that I could bring all my domains to the same renewal date.  Did that happen, or is it still a plan?

Hi Graeme, currently there is nothing on the roadmap to add this feature in the future, but we will continue to consider this option as Hover grows and we receive more requests.

Hi,  Email packages have recently changed. I'm currently on Plus (with 2 mailboxes) but the new Classic Mail (with 5 mailboxes) is cheaper for me.  I'm about to renew, how do I change to Classic Mail from my old Plus deal?

Why is there no option to remove the additional mailboxes.  This is extremely poor UX design.  Will it be addressed in an update?

So, somehow, while I was using hover email, my account was turned into a plus email for a testing period. About a month ago, it was time to renew, but I simply did not have the option to revert back to a normal account. I do not want to pay fifty dollars for just one email account, that is too expensive. Can you please let me know how I can retrieve my mail by renewing my account as a basic email and not plus?
