If you are a Hover customer from the United States and are purchasing domains or email for your company through us, your accounting department may have told you that you need a W-8BEN and a W-9 form before you can do business with us.
What is a W-9 for?
A W-9 form is needed by independent contractors to submit to the IRS in the United States. A W-9 form is a declaration of income received. No one in any other country needs these forms as they're for IRS use.
People like affiliates fall into the category of "independent contractor". If your location is in the United States (for federal income tax purposes) and you were to receive payments/income from Hover while working for us in the capacity of an independent contractor, you might need to request one of these forms from us. If you were in that circumstance and had received more than $600 in income (the IRS threshold) from Hover, then you should ask us for one of these forms.
Do I need a W-9 to purchase domains/email for my company?
No. A W-9 form would be to declare income received from Hover to the IRS in the United States. Hover operates in a retail capacity, selling domains and email services only, so you would not need a W-9 to do retail business with us.
What is a W-8BEN?
A W-8BEN form is sometimes needed by companies in the United States that do business with companies in other countries. No one in any other country needs these forms as they're for IRS use.
This is a form we give to you to declare that we are in another country (conducting business from Canada), we're not collecting taxes from you, and won't be submitting any taxes on your behalf to the IRS.
If your location is in the United States and your office needs you to submit expense forms, etc, for the domains/email that you purchase from Hover for your company, they may request this form along with the expenses you submit to them. If your accounting department asked you to submit this form before or after purchasing domains/email from Hover for your company, you should ask us for one of these forms.
My company is in the United States - won't I need both forms?
No. The W-8BEN is the only one you may need to conduct retail business with Hover and only if your accounting department requests it. As we're doing business from Canada, your office may need this confirmation we're not collecting and submitting taxes to the IRS from our location.
