How to: Enable two-step signin on your Hover account [Updated September 3, 2015]

Two-step signin provides an extra layer of security for your Hover account. It requires you to enter a unique authentication six-digit code in addition to your usual Hover username and password whenever you sign in to your account. Even if someone knows your username and password, they would not be able to access your account without this six-digit code, and the only way to get that code, is to have access to your phone.

You can enable two-step signin on your account from the Settings page. You can also disable it there when you are logged in to your account.

In order to take advantage of two-step signin, you must have a mobile device that can receive text messages or that can run one of the supported mobile authenticator apps.

 

Hover supports two methods of two-step signin: SMS message and mobile app.

  • SMS message—This method uses text messaging to send a code to your mobile phone. When you enter your username and password to sign in to your Hover account, a message is sent to your phone that contains a six-digit security code.You need to retrieve this code and enter it where prompted to complete the signin process.
  • Mobile app—If you install one of the supported authenticator apps on your mobile phone, the six-digit code is generated by the app on your phone. When you enter your username and password to sign in to your Hover account, you will be prompted to enter that code, The following mobile apps are supported: Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, Windows Authenticator, and Authomator. All of these apps are free to download.

Enabling Hover two-step signin via SMS

To enable two-step signin via SMS

1. Sign in to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin.

2. Click Settings.

3. Click Security

4. If Two Step Signin is currently shown as Off, click the checkbox to begin the process of enabling it.

 

5. Click the SMS button, and then click Next.

 

 

6. Select your country from the drop-down list, enter your mobile phone number, and then click Next.

 

 

A six-digit code is sent via SMS to the phone number that you specified.

7. Retrieve the code and enter it in the designated field on the Hover Settings page, then click Save.

 

 

A confirmation message appears to let you know that the two-step signin is enabled. It also provides you with a recovery code.

 

 

Important: Be sure to save the recovery code in a safe place. If you have enabled two-step signin, and you do not have access to your phone, say it's lost or has been stolen, the only way to access your account is for you to enter this recovery code. For security reasons, Support cannot disable the two-step signin for you.

8. Click OK.

Enabling two-step signin code with Duo Mobile mobile app

Duo Mobile can be used on most iOS devices as well as Android.

To enable two-step signin with Duo Mobile

1. Sign in to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin.

2. Click Settings, then Security.

3.  If Two Step Signin is currently shown as Off, click the checkbox to begin the process of enabling it.

 

 

4. Click the Authenticator App button, and then click Next.

 

 

5. Open the Duo Mobile (or another authenticator) app and tap the plus sign (+) to add an entry.

 

 

6. Tap Scan Barcode.

 

 

7.  Scan the QR code that is displayed on the Hover Settings page, and then click Next.

 

 

Alternatively, you can enable the authenticator manually. Tap No Barcode on the Duo Mobile app, and then tap Third-Party Account.

 

 

Enter your account name (we recommend that you use your Hover username) and the key that is displayed on the Hover Settings page. then tap Next.

 

 

 

 

8. On your phone, tap the key icon to display the six-digit authentication code.

 

 

9. Enter this code in the designated field on the Hover Settings page, then click Save.

 

 

A confirmation message appears to let you know that the two-step signin is enabled. It also provides you with a recovery code.

 

 

Important: Be sure to save the recovery code in a safe place. If you have enabled two-step signin, and you do not have access to your phone, say it's lost or has been stolen, the only way to access your account is for you to enter this recovery code. For security reasons, Support cannot disable the two-step signin for you.

10. Click OK.

Enabling two-step signin with Google Authenticator mobile app

The Google Authenticator can be used on most iOS devices as well as Android and BlackBerry. To use Google Authenticator with iOS, you must have iOS 5.0 or later. In addition, in order to set up the app on your iPhone using a QR code, you must have a 3G model or later. To use it on Android, you must be running Android version 2.1 or later. To use it on BlackBerry, you must have OS 4.5-7.0.

Note: These instructions show how to install the authenticator app on an iPhone. The process is very similar on Android and any differences are noted.

To enable two-step signin with the Google Authenticator

1. Sign in to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin.

2. Click Settings and then Security.

3.  If Two Step Signin is currently shown as Off, click the checkbox to begin the process of enabling it.

 

 

4. Click the Authenticator App button, and then click Next.

 

 

5.Open the Authenticator and on an iOS device, tap the plus sign (+) to add an entry. (On Android, tap the Add an account button.)

 

 

6. Tap Scan Barcode on your iOS device or Scan account barcode on your Android device.

 

 

7.  Scan the QR code that you see on the Hover account screen, and then click Next.

Alternatively, you can enable the authenticator manually. Tap Manual Entry on the Authenticator App on your iOS device (tap Manually add account on Android), and enter your account name (we recommend that you use your Hover username), and the key displayed on the Hover Settings page. We recommend that you choose Time Based so that the six-digit code is valid for only a short time, and then changes automatically; if you choose Counter Based, you need to manually refresh the code each time you want it to change.

 

 

 

 

8. Retrieve the six digit code from your phone.

 

 

9.  Enter this code in the designated field on the Hover Settings page, then click Save.

Enabling two-step signin with Windows Authenticator mobile app

Windows Authenticator works on Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8. You can download it from the Windows app store.

To enable two-step signin with the Google Authenticator

1. Sign in to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin.

2. Click Settings and then Security.

3.  If Two Step Signin is currently shown as Off, click the checkbox to begin the process of enabling it.

 

 

4. Click the Authenticator App button, and then click Next.

 

 

5. Open the Authenticator, and tap the plus sign (+) at the bottom of the screen to add an account.

 

 

6. Tap the Camera button on the bottom of the screen.

 

 

7.  Scan the QR code that you see on the Hover account screen, and then click Next.

 

 

Alternatively, you can enable the authenticator manually. On the Authenticator app, enter your account name (we recommend that you use your Hover username) and the key that is displayed on the Hover Settings page, and then tap the save icon.

 

 

8. Retrieve the six digit code from your phone.

 

 

9.  Enter this code in the designated field on the Hover Settings page, then click Save.

Enabling two-step signin with Authomator mobile app

Authomator works on BlackBerry 10, and you can download it from BlackBerry World.

To enable two-step signin with the Authomator

1. Sign in to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin.

2. Click Settings and then Security.

3.  If Two Step Signin is currently shown as Off, click the checkbox to begin the process of enabling it.

 

 

4. Click the Authenticator App button, and then click Next.

 

 

5. Open the Authomator app on your BlackBerry, and then tap the camera icon.

 

 

6. Scan the QR code that you see on the Hover account screen, and then click Next.

 

 

Alternatively, you can enable the authenticator manually. On the Authomator app, click Add at the bottom of the screen.

 

 

Enter your account name (we recommend that you use your Hover username) and in the Secret Key field, enter the key that is displayed on the Hover Settings page,  then tap  Add.

 

 

 

 

7. Retrieve the six digit code from your phone.

 

 

8.  Enter this code in the designated field on the Hover Settings page, then click Save.

 

 

A confirmation message appears to let you know that the two-step signin is enabled. It also provides you with a recovery code.

9. Click OK.

Disabling two-step signin

1. Sign in to your Hover account

2. Click Settings.

3. Beside Two Step Signin, click the box to remove the checkmark.

4. Enter your account password in the text box, and then click Save.

Important: Be sure to follow these steps to disable two-step signin. Do not simply uninstall the authenticator app on your phone.

Using the recovery code

If you're not receiving your text messages, you've lost your phone, or your mobile authenticator app isn't working, you will need to use the sixteen digit emergency recovery code that was sent to you when you enabled two-step sigin. You can use this code to log in to your account when you don't have access to the code that is normally sent via SMS or authenticator. When you use the recovery code to sign in to your Hover account, two-step signin is automatically disabled.

To use the recovery code

1. Go to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin.

2. Enter your username and password.

3. When prompted for your signin code, click I can't use my authenticator app or I've lost my phone. (The prompt that you see depends on whether you enabled two-step signin via SMS or Authenticator App.)

4. Enter your recovery code.
Two-step signin is disabled, and the Settings page appears.

 

 

Getting a new recovery code

You can generate a new recovery code if you have lost the one you were given when you turn on Two-step signin.

To generate a new recovery code, you must be able to log into your hover.com account.

1. Log into your hover.com account

2. Click on Settings and then Security.

3. Click on Generate a new recovery code.

4. Click Yes.

 

Your new recovery code is displayed (write it down and keep it somewhere safe). Your old recovery code is instantly made invalid.

    Need to have a brief bit of instruction on how to switch from where SMS auth is enabled to having mobile app authentication enabled.

    I am guessing you have to turn it off then turn it back on for the other method but there is no instructions regarding that.
