How to: Point your domain to Squarespace 7

This tutorial will show you how to point your Hover domain name at your Squarespace 7 hosted website.

There are two general steps that need to be performed to use your domain name with Squarespace:

1) Set up the correct DNS records in your Hover account

2) Link your domain in your Squarespace account

Step 1: Linking Your Domain

Log into your Squarespace account.

In the Home Menu, click Settings, then click Domains.

Step 1: Linking Your Domain

Click Connect a Third-Party Domain.

Enter the full domain name you’re linking in the Domain Name box, and then click Continue.

Select Hover from the drop-down menu.

Click Connect Domain.

You'll see a message letting you know that the connection to your domain is in progress. Click Okay to continue.

A new panel will open with the records you need to enter in your Hover account so your domain connects to Squarespace. Keep this panel open for your reference.

Add First CNAME Record

Here you will create two CNAME records: one to point your domain to Squarespace, and the other to verify your domain.

First CNAME Record

In this step, you'll either replace an existing CNAME record, or if you don't see a CNAME record, create a new one.

Replace Existing

If you see a CNAME record with www in the Host column, hover over it and click Edit DNS. Replace any text in the box with ext-cust.squarespace.com .

Add New

If you don't see CNAME record with www in the Host column, click ADD NEW.

Add First CNAME Record

In the Record Type drop-down menu, select CNAME. The names of the boxes will change.

In the Hostname box, enter www.

In the Target Host box, enter ext-cust.squarespace.com .

Click Save.

Ensure the CNAME record matches what's shown below:

Add A Records

In the Hostname box, enter @.

Leave A in the Record Type drop-down menu.

In the Value box, enter 198.185.159.144 .

Repeat this process three more times and enter these fields in the Value box.

198.185.159.145

198.49.23.144

198.49.23.145

You should have 4 A Records which look exactly like these:

Note: Delete any other A Records. The only A Records in your account should match the A Records listed above.

Do not delete MX records.

Step 3: Refresh

After changing your records, return to the Squarespace Domains panel, and click Refresh below the records.

The Current Data column in the panel will start to update and show if your records are entered correctly. It could take up to 24 hours for this information to process.

To go the previous panel, click the Back arrow in the top-left corner.

Step 3: Refresh

Step 4: Wait and Test

If all records are entered correctly, your domain will connect to your site within 24 hours. Visit the Domains panel at any time to check your progress.

When the domain is correctly linked, the domain will appear in the Domains panel with a “Correctly Linked” label.

Step 5: Troubleshoot with the DNS record checker

If Squarespace detects that your records weren’t set up properly, your domain will appear in the Domains panel with the message “Can’t verify domain ownership.”

To troubleshoot, use the DNS checker tool in the Domains panel to see the exact CNAME and A Records to fix with your domain provider.

Click the domain in the Domains panel, and then click DNS Settings. For detailed instructions, visit Checking your domain mapping records.
