How to: Use your domain with Squarespace 5

This tutorial will show you how to point your Hover domain name at your Squarespace 5 (classic)  hosted website.

There are two general steps that need to be performed to use your domain name with Squarespace: set up the correct DNS records in your Hover account and linking your domain in your Squarespace account.

Set up your DNS Records in Hover to Point at Squarespace

  1. Visit and sign in with your Hover username and password.

  2. If you have more then one domain name in your account, click on the domain name that you are using with Squarespace to take you to the Domain Details page.

  3. Under Domain Details, check your nameservers to make sure they are pointed at and  If you need help changing your nameservers, click here for a tutorial.

You can use the Edit button on the right and enter the following: and

  4. Click on the DNS tab.

  5. To point your domain at Squarespace, two A records need to be updated, the blank A record (@) for your root domain, and the wildcard A record (*) for sub domains (i.e.

Mouse over the @ and * entries for your domain's A records and click on edit DNS.

  6. Enter the following IP address in the text box and then click Save

    Squarespace 5 (classic):
  7. As pictured below, both A records for the domain are now pointed to Squarespace.

Link to Your Domain in Squarespace 5

  1. Log in to your Squarespace 5 website, click on the gear icon on the right hand side to load Settings, and then click on the Domains link.

Tip: you can hit the escape (Esc) key on your keyboard while viewing your website as a shortcut to log in to your Squarespace control panel.

  2. Click on + Link Existing Domain.

  3. Type in your Hover domain name and then click Add.

  4. A warning may be displayed next to your domain name.  Click on the exclamation for more information.

  5. Changes to DNS records can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 48 hours to update across the Internet.  If you see a warning like the one pictured below that your domain is not correctly pointing to Squarespace, don't despair!  This is normal.  Within 48 hours, your domain will load your Squarespace 5 website

Waiting to see whether this will work or not, but I found another tutorial that is not specific to a host, but gives a different IP to put in the DNS settings:

I tried the tutorial but it did not work. Sqaurespace has its own tutorial which did work though at:

Hi Joseph, Squarespace has been changing their hosting methods, hopefully we can have our articles updates soon. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi Henry, is it normal that my website is down? I've followed instructions on both websites to no avail.

    Hi Mark,

I had a look at your domain and I can see several DNS records that aren't correct or needed.  There's a Blank (@) CNAME record in there that's clobbering all your other records too.  Blank CNAME record cannot coexist with any other Blank record.

    Please delete the following records:

    www     CNAME

    @          CNAME

    www     A

Please also note, the instructions in this tutorial are for Squarespace 5 only.  If you are using Squarespace 6, you'll want to follow this tutorial:

If you're unsure what you're using, you could contact Squarespace to find out.

Let me know if this helps.
