How to: Use your domain with Shopify

This tutorial will show you how to point your domain name at your Shopify website hosting using Hover DNS services.

To point your domain name at Shopify, please complete the following steps:

1. Visit https://www.hover.com/signin and sign in with your Hover username and password.

2. If you have more then one domain name in your Hover.com account, click on the domain name that you are using with Shopify to take you to the Domain Details page.

3. Verify that your Nameservers are set to ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com.

If you need to change your nameservers, click here for instructions.

4. Click on the DNS tab.

5. Hover your mouse over the "@" A record (also called the "root" record) and select Edit DNS.

Then enter the Shopify IP address:  23.227.38.32

Now click Save.

You can repeat this for the "*" A record (also called the "wildcard" record) as well.

6. Next, click on ADD NEW to add a new DNS record. Use the settings below.

Hostname:  www

Record Type:  CNAME

Target Host:  your-shop.myshopify.com     (Where "your-shop" is the name of your shop on your Shopify account)

Don't forget to click Save!

7. Your DNS records should look something like this:

Your domain is now pointed at your Shopify hosting.  If you had to revert your name servers to the Hover default (ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com), please allow up to 24-48 hours for your new DNS settings to take effect.  If you were already using our name servers prior to this set up, please allow about 15 minutes for your new DNS settings to take effect.

I've followed every step and my www is working perfectly but when I try moldaviteplus.com without the www it sometimes works and sometimes reverts to the Hover placeholder page.  What am I doing wrong?  I've checked from multiple computers and have cleared my cache and it's still back and forth.  I appreciate any help you can provide.

Followed the directions, but when I get to inputting my shopify store, I have two dashes harbor-country-store and it won't accept the two dashes. Now what do I do? Thanks.

I'd like to set this up on a sub domain, courses.balancesolutions.com.  How do I do that?

Adam, you can add a CNAME record for the subdomain in your Hover DNS records. You will also need to add the subdomain to your Shopify Domain Manager.

I've followed each step, and although my domain leads back to shopify - it says the store is no longer available. I'm not sure if it helps to mention that I also purchased a domain name via shopify, so when updating the CNAME I was confused as to whether it should be pointed to the my-shop.myshopify.com url or my purchased .com domain that is currently running as well on the account. In other words - I'm trying to ensure that whether my clients go to either domain they're both going to the same place. thanks!

Hi - I am having the same issue Aaron and Herman.  When I omit the www on my domain, it does not always work.  What was the solution for them?

Hi Gregg, I went ahead and sent you an email so we can get that resolved for you. Generally speaking, if you find the www is resolving fine, you can change the A records so they point to our default IP 64.99.80.30 and forward the domain to the root domain including the www i.e. http://www.example.com

    Hi Nathan,

I had a look at the DNS for your domain and it looks like you have a few things set up incorrectly.  Not to worry, I can help you out.  Here are some things you should do to resolve this:

    • Delete the wordpress name servers.  They should be just the hover servers: ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com

    • Remove the two default Hover A records for @ and * . You currently have our default records set up as well as the two A records for Shopify.  Our default records are the two A records pointing to 64.99.80.30

    • The CNAME record should be a hostname.  Right now you have http:// at the beginning, making it a URL.  Edit that record and remove the http://

This should resolve the issues you're having.  If you have any trouble with this, please send us an email to help@hover.com and we can help out.

I also must be doing something incorrectly. I have followed along with the instructions above and I am taken to my domain, but I have a page from Shopify that indicates this shop is unavailable.

It seems that I just needed to wait a little for the changes to take effect - everything is good. Thanks!

Hi Jim - sorry for the delay - yes it takes about 15 mins for the records to be live and allow the setup to connect to Shopify fully.

Mark - glad you got the setup for the DNS completed!

    Cheers!

IMPORTANT - Shopify has updated its DNS servers and the cutover date was November 1st.  Anyone with Hover and Shopify will need to update their DNS info.

    See: https://docs.shopify.com/support/settings/domains/domain-ip-migration

    Good luck!

Step 5 in this writeup is out of date, as mentioned in other comments. Shopify now has a single IP address it uses for custom domains: 23.227.38.32. The DNS A record must be set to that address to work with Shopify.
