How to: Configure Hover email in Mozilla Thunderbird (Updated Aug 2015)

This tutorial will step you through configuring your Hover email address in Mozilla Thunderbird 13 for Windows.

  1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird.  Click on the Tools menu and select Account Settings.

  2. Click on Account Actions and select Add Mail Account.

  3. Enter the following:

Your name:  Type your name as you wish it to appear when you send email.
Email address:  Type your Hover email address
Password:  Type your Hover email password.

    Click Continue.

  4. Thunderbird will try to configure settings automatically using its ISP database.  Click on the Manual Config button.

  5. Enter the following settings, as pictured below:

Username:  Enter your full Hover email address
    Incoming:  mail.hover.com
    Outgoing:  mail.hover.com

Select IMAP after the Incoming mail server name.  Although we recommend using IMAP, POP3 can also be used.

Incoming port number:  993 (995 if you are using POP3 instead of IMAP)
    Outgoing port number:  465

    Incoming security:  SSL/TLS
    Outgoing security:  SSL/TLS

Authentication needs be set to Normal password for both incoming and outgoing mail.

Once these settings have been entered, click on Create Account.

Note - Thunderbird 13 users may receive an error if they try to re-test these settings even after the settings are entered perfectly.  The settings above should work after clicking on Create Account.  It is not necessary to re-test the settings.  Please ignore any errors when testing the settings prior to creating the account.
  6. Thunderbird has been configured for your Hover email account and your account folders and messages will start downloading.

Hi Matthew - You'll have to export the contact from webmail first, and then upload the file to Thunderbird.  Here you can see how to export your contact in webmail:   https://help.hover.com/entries/21215922-how-to-use-hover-webmail#wbimportexport

It didn't import properly.  It had names and all email addresses started with quotes and left off the m in .com.  I did everything manually.  I have a much greater problem than that though.  My folders that were imported were not quite correct.  It imported folders I no longer have and haven't had for some time but also imported some that I do currently use.  The ones that are dead folders will not delete from Thunderbird and I can't figure out how to get it to retrieve my old ones.

Hi Matthew - The folders could be resolved by making sure you're subscribed to.  The importing of the contact might be something can help with if you still need it.  I just sent you an email to your hover email address.  Let me know if my suggestions there help out with the folders.

David, please confirm your username and password are correct by trying to log into webmail with them at: https://mail.hover.com

If you can't log in there either then you'll need to log into your Hover control panel to reset the email password under the Email tab (the instructions for that can be found at: https://help.hover.com/entries/21262082-How-to-Change-your-email-password)

Yeah, I second what David is saying, It's telling me that username or password is wrong but they are most definitely not. I can log into webmail easily but Thunderbird won't accept it.

    Hi!

Is it possible to change from POP3 to IMAP without losing data?

    Hi Prasheila,

It's possible to switch from POP3 to IMAP without losing your emails

Each time your email client uses POP3 to retrieve emails, it's actually removing the emails from our email server to move them to your email client. Many modern email clients will generate a copy of the original emails and put them back ont he server.

Before you make the switch you may want to sign into Webmail first at https://mail.hover.com to see if all of your messages are stored on our server first.

If you notice when signing into Webmail that your emails are not stored there, this means that your email client is not backing up copies of your messages and you will need to archive them in a "Local Folder" (sometimes called a "Personal Folder") in your email client, before removing the POP3 connection and configuring an IMAP connection in its place.

After making the switch, you can then move emails from your Local Folders and place them back in the Inbox on your IMAP connection. This will move your emails back onto the email server as well.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to send us an email at help@hover.com to follow-up.
