How to: Set up email forwarding

This article will show you how to set up Email Forwarding on a domain you have registered with Hover.

Please choose which scenario applies to you:

I already have, or just bought, a Small or Big Mailbox

  1. Log into your Hover account https://hover.com/signin

  2. If you only have one domain, you will already be on Step 3.

If you have more than one domain, click on the domain you have your email associated with.

    save image

  3. On the Overview page, Make sure you are using the Hover nameservers:
    ns1.hover.com
    ns2.hover.com

If you need to edit these, use the Edit link in the corner. Edits to the DNS in your Hover account will not apply to your domain if you are not using our DNS nameservers.

If you are using another company's nameservers, such as your website hosting provider, then you must go to the hosting provider to make sure the Hover MX Record is updated.

    save image

  4. Select the DNS page.

You want to be sure our MX Record is there.
This is what it looks like: MX  @  10 mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.com

    save image

  5. With our MX record in place, you can now click on Email.

If you haven't set up the email address yet, click on the link showing how many mailboxes you have available to create.

    save image

    OR

If you already have your email address set up, but just need to add the email forwarding, click on the Edit link next to your mailbox.

    save image

    To create the email address:
    - Select the Mailbox Type you have available to create.
    - Create a Mailbox Name, the part before the @ in your email.
    - Set a Password.

To set up the Email Forwarding
    - Toggle Forward to a green "on" position.
    - Enter the Email Address you want your email forwarded to.
    - Click Create Mailbox.

    save image

I just bought a Mail Forward

If you bought a Mail Forward, not a Small Mailbox or Big Mailbox, you can click on the link showing how many Mail Forwards you have available to create.

save image

Enter the Forward Name. This is the part before the @ of your email address.

Enter the Email Address you want your emails forwarded to.  Remember, our mail forwards do not have the ability to send email. They can only forward email to another address.

Once set, click Create Forward.

save image

Your Mail Forward has been set up.

    Hello,

I'm having a similar problem to many others on this page. I have an active forwarding address pointed towards my gmail, but all mail I send to the forwarding address bounces. If it helps, the address I have set as a forwarding address was recently a full address with an account I had with godaddy, but have since cancelled.

    Hi Benjamin,

I noticed you changed the name servers yesterday so I believe you have solved the problem. The DNS looks good as it has the appropriate MX record and the forward is setup correctly so it should be forwarding fine.

I sent you a test message and an email that you can reply to confirm whether or not you're still experiencing any issues.

I just setup forwarding to a Gmail account. I haven't touched any DNS, MX, or any other type records at all as at this point all I need is the one email to forward. Unfortunately, no emails are arriving at my gmail destination.

    TIA

    Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the post and sorry for the delay replying to you here.  I had a look and can see the issue.  Your name servers are still pointing to your old host.  You can update those to ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com.  Keep an eye out for an email shortly with a bit more detail and instructions on how to do this.

Hey guys.. Thanks for this great (and cheap) service..

I had moved my Name server to a different service (digital ocean) but I pointed back the MX records here: mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.com

I waited a few days for the DNS to propagate (and a dig for lebaneseblogs.com does show your mx records) but for some reason mail is not coming through. I'm not getting returned mail errors and I'm not finding the emails in my spam folder.. How can I troubleshoot this?

Hi.  Like many others, I set up a forwarding account to go to a gmail, and my test emails aren't coming through.  The emails are not going into spam in gmail.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Spencer

    Hi all!

    Be careful!

Hover does not forward ALL emails as stated in the description of the product. Hover only forwards emails, that they state as no spams.

Any email, which hover thinks is a spam, wont reach you - never.

Sometimes real spams are forwarded, but sometimes "normal" emails where suppressed by hover.

And neither the sender, nor you as receiver of the email will get any notice of this fact!

    Think about this fact.

    wbr, Markus

    Hello,

A couple of questions about this. I don't receive any test mails I've tried to send to my new hover e-mail address.I can't see what I might have done wrong, it seems to me that I've done everything the same as in the tutorial.

Also is it not possible to set my gmail to send e-mails as the hover one? It seems otherwise a bit annoying that I'd have to respond to e-mails coming to my new e-mail from my gmail address - confusing for those sending me a mail to the new address..

    Hi Matthias,

It's not possible to send messages from a forward only address as it doesn't include a mailbox. If you are looking to send and receive messages from an address, then it would be a good idea to consider our small or big mailbox options.

I've sent you an email for some assistance with getting your forward only address functioning properly. Keep in mind, test messages sent from the gmail address you are forwarding to would not be received as they are blocked from gmail to prevent a loop.

Just to clarify, is the $5 forwarding service a one time fee or a yearly fee?

I used to be able to forward a copy of an email (to my BB) while keeping the original for POP3 downloading which may happen later. I have now gone over to IMAP and set up a forward to my icloud email, but that seems to remove the original email. I want to keep the original- can I do that?

I seem to be having the same issue as many before me. I'm attempting to forward to my personal gmail account, but no emails are going through. What can I do? I tried calling earlier today around 2:00pm EST but the phone kept ringing until music played. Thank you!

    Hello Simon,

If you wish to forward and be able to IMAP your email, you will need to make a modification in your email forwarding settings.  If you login to your webmail access at https://mail.hover.com, under Settings - Mail Forwarding, check the option of keep local copy and save.

Thanks. I looked for that but I was looking in the main account email forwarding settings where there doesn't seem to be a similar box to tick

    Hello Tarif,

I checked your address and I can see that we are handing off messages to the Gmail servers. If you haven't already, check your junk folder and add your email address with us to your contacts so Gmail will know you are expecting the message.  If you are still unable to see the messages, shoot us an email at help@hover.com and we will do some more tests.

Hi all – thought I could figure this out after reading the thread, but a little stumped:

How do I set up appropriate e-mail "Send as" in gmail? Have not either yet begun receiving the test e-mails to my mail forward.

    Thanks for looking into this.

    Hi Shawn,

We actually have this written up in another article, which I've linked below for you.

Hover.com | How to use Hover mail from Gmail:

    https://help.hover.com/entries/21206408-How-to-Use-Hover-mail-from-Gmail

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page linked above, it will show a section which helps you to set up Sending from Gmail through the Hover outgoing servers.  To get to that setting in Gmail directly, go to the Accounts menu and under "Send mail as:" click "Add another email address you own".  This will bring you to the menu shown in the guide linked above.

You will be prompted to enter your name and email address, and you can turn off the option to "Treat as an alias".  Click "Next Step" and you will be prompted to enter the following data.

    SMTP Server: mail.hover.com

Port: 465 Username: (your Hover email address) Password: (the corresponding password to that email address)

Ensure that "Secured connection using SSL" is selected and click "Add Account".  Gmail will then send you an email with a link which you can click on to verify that you are allowing your Gmail account to send email from that address.

Let me know if you encounter any issues, or feel free to send us an email at help@hover.com if you'd like to troubleshoot further!

    Hello!

Seems I'm having that common problem of having just set up a forwarding email, but none of my test emails are being received. I've checked the destination email's spam folder, and the emails are also not bouncing back to the accounts I sent them from. I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks!

    Hi Nolan,

I noticed you're forwarding to a Gmail address. Are you sending your test emails from the same Gmail account that your Hover email address is forwarding to?  If so, this is an issue with Gmail.  Not really an issue, actually, but they see this as an email loop, sending an email to an address that is set up to forward back to the same Gmail address.  Try a test from a different email address and see if it works.

Let me know if there's any issues still.

    Hi Blair,

I sent two test emails, one from the same account and one from a different account. Neither seemed to go through, but I just sent two more test emails from two separate accounts, and both went through! So it looks like everything is in working order now! Thanks for your assistance.

Hello! I was wondering how to go about sending as the forwarding address form my email account, something that was mentioned as a possibility in one of these comments. The standard method of adding a hover address doesn't seem to work.

    Hi Alec,

Sending email from a Hover email account using another platform, such as Gmail, can only be done if you are using one of Hover's Small Mailboxes or Big Mailboxes, however not with the Forward Only email account that we offer.  Prices and features of these three types of email accounts can be seen at https://www.hover.com/email

If using a Small or Big Mailbox, and still choosing to Forward email with one of those accounts, you can use the Hover SMTP server settings (listed below) to allow you to configure your forwarding email account to also send from your Hover account as well.

    • Email User Name:  Your full email address
    • Password:  your email password (as opposed to your management account password)
    • Outgoing Mail (SMTP):  mail.hover.com
    • SMTP: 465 (if SSL encryption is enabled); 587, 25 or 8025 (if SSL encryption is disabled)

Gmail is the most popular type of email account to forward to, and we have an instruction guide written up on how to send from your Hover email account within Gmail.  However, just to reiterate, this can not be done with a Forward Only email account.
