How to: Transfer my domain to Hover - Domain Transfer FAQ

1. What is a domain name transfer?

A domain name transfer is the process of moving management of a domain from one registration provider/registrar to another.

2. How do I transfer a domain to Hover?

Before beginning the transfer process, you will need to ensure your domain is properly set up for a transfer and that you have all of the required information. The process will vary depending on your current domain provider, but there are general steps that are common between many registrars.

Generally, before transferring your domain to Hover you will need to:

  • Disable domain registration privacy settings.
  • Verify that your Administrative email address in the domain registration record is accurate.
  • Unlock your domain by removing/disabling the transfer lock.
  • Get your domain’s transfer authorization code (sometimes called an EPP key, secret code or auth code).

Next, visit Hover.com and select "Transfer" from the toolbar. Then, type the domain name you'd like to transfer into the text box and hit the green "Check" box to the right of the text field.

On the next screen, you will see a list of the important pre-transfer tasks you completed through your current provider. Each item will have a green checkmark. If any items don't, you will want to head back over to your current provider and complete that specific task. Then try again. When you see all green checkmarks, you're ready to start.

On this screen, you will need to confirm your email address. To do so, select send approval email. This will deliver a message to the administrative email address in your domain's registration. Open this email and click on the link - this will take you to the approval page. On this page, enter your initials in the confirmation box and select Agree. This is your electronic signature. Once verified, you'll be redirected to the transfer-in page on Hover.

On the transfer-in page, select Add to Cart and then Checkout to continue. In the shopping cart, enter the authorization code in the appropriate text field and place your order. If you don't already have a user account, you will be able to create one during this step. Once this is done, your domain transfer will start. Remember, it can take 5-7 days for a transfer between providers to complete.

3. How do I know if a domain is eligible for transfer?

There are a few scenarios that would make your domain ineligible for transfer:

  • The domain was registered in the past 60 days.
  • The domain was transferred in the past 60 days.
  • The domain is in redemption (after a domain expires, you have a 40-day grace period to renew it. After this, it will enter a redemption period for another 30 days during which you can reclaim the domain for a fee).
  • The domain has an unresolved domain dispute.

Additionally, the registries of some top-level domains have their own rules regarding domain transfer eligibility. Check with the registry behind the particular TLD you use for your domain for more information.

4. What happens to the remaining time that I have already registered?

Regardless of when you transfer, you will keep the remaining time left on your domain’s registration. The cost of your domain transfer will add an additional year of registration after the domain’s expiry date. For example, a domain transferred on October 1, 2015 that is set to expire on January 15, 2016 will now expire on January 15, 2017. This will be the case for most top-level domains, however there are a few exceptions that will not apply an additional year. Check with your particular TLD’s registry to see what their domain transfers policy is.

5. Do I need to wait until my domain is about to expire before transferring?

No! In fact, it is highly recommended that you transfer your domain with plenty of time remaining on its registration so there will be no potential complications. This will allow for time to properly prepare the domain for transfer. For example, some providers will ask you to first settle up your account or will take a few days to send you your authorization code.

In most cases, you can transfer your domain at any time (provided it was not transferred or registered in the last 60 days) and keep the remaining time already registered for that domain. There are a few exceptions with some top-level domains, so check with your TLD’s registry for their domain transfers policy.

6. What is an authorization code?

A domain authorization code (also referred to as an EPP key/code or auth code) is a unique 6 to 32 character code that has been assigned to a domain. We will need this code in order to access the information associated with the domain residing with your current registrar.

7. Can I transfer an expired domain name?

This will depend on your current domain provider. In most cases, you will still be able to transfer your expired domain name, as long as it is within its renewal grace period. The length of this will vary depending on your registrar, though is often around 30 days.

When transferring a domain during the renewal grace period, you have a few options. The recommended method is to obtain your authorization code from your current registrar and then transfer the domain to your new registrar. Alternatively, you can renew the domain with your current registrar and then initiate the transfer with your new one. Just note that if you transfer within 60 days after your renewal, you will not keep the additional time added to your registration.

Some registration providers, however, do not allow transfers of expired domains. To initiate a transfer, they will require payment and renewal prior to doing so. Always check with your current domain provider for their specific rules on transferring out expired domain names.

8. How long does a domain transfer take?

There are many factors that will affect the time it takes for your domain to transfer, so it is difficult to provide an accurate estimate. Things like your current registrar’s policies and support, as well as the domain’s extension/top-level domain, can all affect the length of the transfer. Be prepared for the process to wait 1-2 weeks to finalize.

9. Is there a domain transfer fee?

Hover does not charge a domain transfer fee. Instead, you will be charged for one year of additional registration that is added to whenever your domain is currently set to expire. This is the case for most top-level domains, however there are a few exceptions. Check with your TLD’s registry to see their policy on domain transfers.

    If you are looking to transfer a domain within hover to another hover account, customer service can do this for you. It only took a few minutes for me.

    I just tried to transfer three domains over from GoDaddy and two of the transfers were denied by GoDaddy. What happens now since my two domains are still with GoDaddy and Hover has already charged me for the additional one year of all three domains? Any one else experience this before?

    Hi Ngoc

    For the domain transfers that were unsuccessful, the orders were cancelled. When cancelled, the amount paid is refunded. 

    Since the domains were not transferred, you'll want to check with GoDaddy to see if they are able to tell you why they did not allow the transfer to occur. Occasionally there is a lock applied when you make changes and you can request them remove that hold.

    Will all of the DNS and MX records of the domain also be transferred automatically? I don't have to reconfigure everything after the transfer completes, do I?

    When you begin a transfer, the nameservers that are assigned to your domain come to Hover during the process. If you are currently using third party nameservers that need to be updated so we can add your DNS and MX records first, please send us an email at help@hover.com so we can assist you with a valet transfer.     What are the benefits of having all your domains with the one registrar? I'm just trying to figure out whether I should go through the hassle of transferring my domains to the one company.

    I went with Hover because they are a good company and make an effort to make my life easier. I was not having any problems with my prior registrar but wanted to support people that are doing good work. Also, they don't try to pressure you into getting all the "add-ons".

    And . . . . . it didn't cost me anything extra.
