How to: Transfer your domain away from Hover

The following Transfer Out process applies to the majority of domains supported by Hover. If you have a ccTLD (country code top level domain such as .io, .de, .ch, etc) with special instructions, or that doesn't follow this guide, please contact support and we'll be able to give you a hand.

In order to transfer your domain away, you must complete the following actions:

  • Turn off Whois Privacy
  • Update the Administrative Contact Email Address (if required)
  • Turn off domain Transfer Lock
  • Obtain the Authorization Code

Note: You can transfer your domain away from Hover at any time. You do not need to wait until the expiration date. In fact, it's recommended that you don't leave a transfer until the last minute so you have plenty of time to get it completed. The majority of domains will be renewed for one year, with the New Provider, upon transfer.

  1. Sign in to your Hover account https://www.hover.com/signin
  2. If you have more than one domain name in your account you will see a list of Your Domains. From this list you can click on the domain name you are transferring away. You can also click on the Edit menu, and choose More.

If you only have one domain name in your account, you will be on the correct page upon login, so you can skip ahead to the next step.

    edit_menu_options___choose_more.png

  3. On the domain Overview page, you can now prepare the domain for transfer.

    A) Set Whois Privacy to Off.
    B) Set the Transfer Lock to Off.
    C) Retrieve your Authorization Code, and copy it down. You will need to provide this to the new registrar so they can complete your transfer.
    D) Check the Admin contact to ensure the Email Address is valid and you have access to it. If you need to edit the email address, you can click on Edit. If you need help editing this, you can check out our help article, How To: Update Registration Records.

    overview_page_TRANSFER_OUT_prep.png

  4. Now that these steps have been completed, you can have the new provider initiate a transfer for you. Please contact a new service provider of your choice and ask them to initiate the transfer.

A few notes about transfers out:

- The new provider may require the admin contact email address to receive and approve the transfer before it can be initiated. Once this is approved, the transfer will be submitted.

- The transfer process is automated. If you have initiated a transfer with the new provider, and you have not yet received an email from Hover to approve it, the transfer probably hasn't yet been submitted to us. When our system receives a request to transfer a domain out, we immediately send an email to the Admin Contact Email Address asking them to approve or decline the transfer. If you approve this, the transfer will complete right away.

- If you do not approve this final email, the transfer will auto-complete in 5-7 days.

- To cancel a transfer OUT of Hover, you must either decline the transfer using the link in the email we would have sent you, or, you can contact support to see if we're able to resend this email to you, so you can decline the transfer. This may not always be available, and once you have approved the transfer, we cannot cancel it.

I am wanting to transfer my .co.uk domain to another provider, however I cannot generate an auth code for it it says 'unsupported' when I attempt to on the Domains page. When I attempt the steps above when I reach the 'Show Public Contact Details'  the whole section is in grey with yes selected but it says 'Not Supported'  in the middle column. All of my other settings are correct, and I am able to generate an auth code for my .com address without any problem.

The transfer of .CO.UK domains doesn't actually need auth codes. Instead, the transfer policy for .CO.UK domains require that the losing Registrar, in your case Hover, must change the domain's registrar tag (the IPS Tag) before the transfer can be initiated. You can contact us with the IPS Tag of the provider you are moving to, so that we can update your domain before the transfer starts.

Please call us at 1-866-731-6556 or by email at help@hover.com to initiate your .CO.UK domain transfer.

The administrative email contact needs to be up-to-date. In what? In that from me here by Hover or the admin contact address from my new provider.

Hi Theo, your admin contact should always be up-to-date regardless of the domain provider you are using.

Sorry Brennan, I can't remember that I had have to fill in that part of the Domain Details. It was already done for me by the system.  Now I have used the "same as owner" button. Hopefully that is correct.

Hi, I just want to check that this would be the process to transfer a domain that I own on Hover to another person who will use another hosting company?

Hi Eric, the process above is how to transfer your domain from one Registration Service Provider to another, but keeping ownership of it. If you want to transfer ownership you have a couple of options.

    1)  You can provide them access to your Hover account so they can update the registration records from your Hover dashboard.

    2) You can provide your authorization codes to the new owner of your domain and have them initiate a transfer into their hosting company. Once the domain transfers, they can update the registration records themselves

Since Hover recently tried to overcharge me for my domain, and then when I complained within a few hours after realizing I was being overcharged, my email was turned-off by Hover, on a Saturday morning, when Hover is closed for the weekend and cannot be reached by phone, I am - naturally - looking for another hosting service.

My question is: Will all my mail history, including read mail, sent mail, etc., be transferred to my new hosting service, and can I retain my same email address?

Would I be able to give a domain I own to someone as a gift by doing the steps above and telling them the transfer code? Would there be any other steps? Are these the same steps if they happened to be a Hover customer as well?

Hi Chadwick, the instructions above only work for transferring domains to a different registrar. If you are looking to move a domain within hover just give us a call or send us an email and we'll take care of it for you: 1-866-731-6556  help@hover.com

    Joel,

I'm very disappointing...According to Tyson message above,  "The email includes a link that you can use to cancel or confirm the transfer away request.  If you confirm it, we will tell the registry to bypass the 5 day hold.  If you do nothing, the hold will time out after 5 days and the transfer will proceed."  I did confirm, but haven't seen anything after 3 days wait.  Please advice.  Thanks

    Anthony,

Your motives are pure, but believe me, there are many people on the net whose motives are not pure, and who will steal business and/or commandeer domain names if given a chance. The process is mandated internet-side, not by Hover -- Hover tries within their power to make it a little easier. The process is there to protect YOU.

    Hi Anthony,

When you transfer a domain from one registrar to another, whichever registrars they may be, your domain must be unlocked, the admin email address must be a current valid address you can access (so you can verify it before the transfer is submitted), the domain privacy must be removed (so the admin verification email and transfer approval email can be sent to you), and you must get your authorization code.  We designed our interface in such a way that you can do all of this on one page, "Domain Details".

If you are having trouble with these steps, or transferring your domain away, please get in touch with us and we can help you out.

I want to transfer three domains to someone else so can I just open a second account at Hover, transfer them to that account within Hover and then give the contact info and password, etc to the new owner?  I don't believe they have a registrar already so they might as well stay here.

Hi Kent, I've just sent you a quick email to assist you with creating the new account and moving the domains there. You can update the contact information and password after we move the domains into the new account.

I just had my domains set to transfer from my Ex (also with Hover) I was able to "renew" them... not sure if I needed to do that? I forwarded my order confirmation to your help email. I want to ensure these are with me and not him.

    Hi Tracey,

I am seeing the email which you had sent to us at help@hover.com on Saturday, December 13, however it appears that was in regards to a domain registration order rather than a domain transfer.  I'll send you a new email to follow-up, as perhaps I am looking at emails sent from a different email address.

I recently tried to transfer a domain to 1and1 and I didn't have the "WhoIs" privacy unchecked now did I have my Admin data set properly.  I'm not sure if I need to redo the transfer or not but when I tried to do it again from 1and1 a message told me that the domain might not be transferable? Is there anyway to determine if this process is in fact ongoing?  Thanks.

    Hi David,

In a few moments, I'm sending you an email from help@hover.com to follow-up with you about your domain transfer.

Please keep an eye out for that email and send me a reply if you'd like!

Why does the transfer away from Hover takes 5-7 days while it can be done with a by-pass by sending an email as stated in point 5 at explanation above?

    Hi Bent,

As mentioned in a previous comments in this article, the domain registry places a 5 day hold on domain names after a transfer request is received.

We do send an email to the administrator of a domain name, as specified within the ICANN Registration Records, when a transfer away has been initiated.  This allows that administrator to expedite their transfer away by approving the transfer request.

How long should I expect it to take to remove the transfer lock and whois privacy?  I unchecked those boxes days ago but whois still shows the wrong admin email.  I only have a couple of weeks to complete this transfer so I'd really like to get the process moving.  Many thanks!

PS - I've loved the service you've provided. If you're curious about why you're losing me as a customer, it all comes down to my need for DynamicDNS.  :(

Hi, I registered here and didn't really think about the website build.  Now I just read that I have to wait 60 days to transfer my website to another server.  Why is this necessary?  Is there any website templates you work with that you will allow a quicker transfer to?  Thanks

    Hi Amanda

The 60 day hold is imposed by the registry for transfers of the domain registration to another registrar. This is for security of the domain owner. But as the domain owner you can link your domain to hosting provider at anytime - without having to transfer the domain. I've sent you over a message with more details for your account. Please look out for that response.

    Cheers!
