How to: Transfer your domain away from Hover

The following tasks need to be completed before a domain can be transferred:

  • Domain privacy needs to be disabled.
  • The administrative email contact needs to be up-to-date.
  • The domain needs to be unlocked.
  • You will need your domain's transfer authorization code.

Please complete the following steps to transfer your domain away from Hover:

  1. Sign in to your Hover account online at https://www.hover.com/signin
  2. If you have more than one domain name in  your account, click on the domain name that you are transferring away.

  3. Next, make sure the the domain is unlocked, privacy is disabled, and you have your Auth Code copied down.

    1. Deselect the locking and privacy options on the right.
    2. Copy your authorization code so you can provide this to the new service provider.
    3. Check your Admin contact details to ensure the email address is valid and you have access to it.

  4. Correct your admin email address, as required, and then click Save.

  5. After completing the above steps, contact your new service provider and ask them to initiate the transfer.  After being initiated, domain transfers can take 5-7 days to be completed.  When we receive the request from the new service provider, we will send you an email to decline or approve the transfer.  This will bypass the 5 day hold on the transfer and it will be released from our system right away.

This process could be made a bit simpler, no? Seems like a lot of clicks and steps.

@Kevin - Transfers can be convoluted, or pretty straight forward depending on the situation.  If  your domain contact details are up-to-date, it's really just three clicks - set transfer lock to off, make sure public details are on, and then copy the auth code so you can provide it to the new registrar.  We included steps to verify and update the admin email address because out of date contact details is a major road block to moving out domain names.  A few extra steps of preparation can save days of aggravation.

Why does the transfer on your end take 5-7 days to process? Is there anywhere where the progress can be viewed?

    Thanks.

The domain registry places a 5 day hold on domain names after a transfer request is received.  After your initiate a transfer away from Hover, we automatically send a transfer away request email to your domain's administrative email address contact.  The email includes a link that you can use to cancel or confirm the transfer away request.  If you confirm it, we will tell the registry to bypass the 5 day hold.  If you do nothing, the hold will time out after 5 days and the transfer will proceed.

We do not have a place on our website to monitor the status of transfers out.  Most of the process is handled by the domain registry and your new service provider.   Click here for the ICANN policy on registrar domain transfers if you want to learn more about how transfers of domain names between domain registrars work.

Hello Tyson, thank you for your response, much appreciated.

You mention that after you initiate a transfer away from Hover, you automatically send a transfer away request email to domain's administrative email. I am the recipient for those and did not receive one yesterday. I did receive one from other party with Transaction ID and Security Code. I also added your Authorization Code where required. Please advise.

    Thanks again for your help.

The transfer out confirmation message was resent.  If you do a whois look up online using http://smartwhois.com you will see the admin email address that the approval message was sent to.

Tyson, if the domain transfer is cancelled mid-transfer from another registrar (before verification from either Hover or the admin, so, very early) , does the 5 day hold still occur? Also, how long does a normal transfer verification email take to come? Thanks.

Hi Kevin - the verification email from Hover typically arrives within a few hours to your domain name's admin email contact. If the gaining registrar canceled the request it will not go through unless it was already pending registry approval. The answer varies on a case by case basis so you might want to give us a call so we can help out.

When the system gives an incorrect code how do we generate a new code?

I see a slightly different set of options on the transfer process. "Transfer this domain to?— yes/no" is third on my menu. I imagine I should select Yes. I did the process above (without this last step)  and GoDaddy responded "unavailable for transfer" for the domain name. I'm on hold with their help department.

Hi Paul - you can edit authorization codes in Hover using the Edit button to the right of the code currently displayed. For most TLDs, the auth code must be 8 to 32 characters and contain at least one number, one letter and one special character.

Hi James - I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're seeing. You can give us a call if you need help preparing your domain for a transfer to GoDaddy. That would be the fastest way to get this resolved for you. We have a hold time of zero right now.

Sorry James - I think I found the issue. I looked at your account and your domain names are less than 60 days old. Domains need to be registered for a minimum of 60 days before they can be transferred between registrars.

I am having a problem transferring my domain away from Hover. I have done all of the above steps. It is unlocked. I have given the new registrar the Authorization code. I made sure the email is set correctly for the Admin. The problem is that in the Whois it says the Admin contact is Contact Privacy Inc and instead of listing my email, it lists [mydomain.com]@contactprivacy.com.

I do not know who Contact Privacy Inc is.  The Whois also says that Tucows is the Registrar of Record **and Hover is the Registrar Service Provider.**

Hi Guy - Thanks for the message here.  It sounds like you haven't removed the domain privacy on your domain so the new registrar is not able to send you the approval email to the correct email address.  You can remove the privacy from logging into your account, clicking on the domain you wish to transfer, under the "domain details" select the option "yes" next to "Show Public Contact Details".

What happens about all the messages and folders we have saved on our hover account? Can they get transferred to our new provider? Also all the email addresses/contacts we have?

Hi Steve - If you want to keep the emails and contacts when you switch to a new provider, you'll first have to back up all your emails.  You can do this in a program such as Outlook or Thunderbird.   We have several tutorials that show you how to set up Hover mail in various mail clients.

You can find them here:  https://help.hover.com/entries/21188903-email-server-settings

Once you have your email set up, you can export the messages from the mail client and then import them into the new account at the new provider.  Or, if you can have the new provider set up your email ahead of time, you can set up both your Hover email and the new email address in the same email client as IMAP accounts, and then simply move the emails from one to the other.   IMAP is included with your email at Hover.

As for your contacts, you can export your contacts from webmail:  https://mail.hover.com

Here is our help article on that: https://help.hover.com/entries/21215922-how-to-use-hover-webmail#wbimportexport

You than then import the contacts to your new email account.  If you need any help with this, please feel free to give us a call.

I'm transferring to someone who doesn't own any URLs and has no account anywhere, I'd like to refer them to use Hover, but I wonder if you can advise how to do that. When she tried to create a Hover account, she was asked to buy a URL, is there another way?

If she gives us a call, we can create an account for her to transfer the domain into.

Please immediately resend transfer authorization/confirmation email for bigbearcowboygathering.net to the admin contact email on record.

Liz, it doesn't look as though a transfer out request ever made it to us. You'll need to re-initiate the transfer with whoever you're transferring the domain to in order to have it sent.

I'm trying to transfer my domain (pigeonpatrol.com) to another owner (not a hover.com user) and I've been completely unable to edit either the owner or admin record.  Every time I try, I get an error pop-up: "Modification(s) failed (Code 400)" and the changes don't stick.

I have submitted several support requests but haven't yet received a response.

    Please help!

Am I supposed to provide the EPP (Authorization) code to the new owner, or is that to be kept private?

Hi, I'm trying to transfer to gandi.net because our web developer works in French and gandi is in French too. I've done all the steps requested above, copied the authorisation code and was told by gandi.net  that 'there was an error during transfer' - namely error 2304 'The domain is not in a state at the current registrar that will allow the domain to be transferred. Either it is already being transferred or its status is blocking the transfer. You will need to see with the current provider to unblock it.'

I am a techno numpty and don't really understand all this - can someone please help? I'm keeping my other sites with Hover, so it's not a mass emigration!

    Thanks in advance.

Supplementary evidence to my post above - does the Hover admin person and admin address need to be identical to the one on gandi.net? I've registered with Gandi under our company name and company address, so I wonder if that's what I should put under Admin with Hover....?

AHA! I think I've found the answer - domains need to be registered for a minimum of 60 days before they can be transferred...

SO. My supplementary question is (forgive the total cluelessness): can we not simply have hover be the domain name host and gandi as the web host? My developer asked me to change the domain name host, but is there any good reason we can keep hover as the domain name host whilst the web hosting service is gandi??

Michael, I see Rob is assisting you already, so you should be in good hands.

Alex, I can't think of any reason why you couldn't do that, as that's the essence of what we do, that unless Gandi has some rule against it. I'd ask Gandi for the DNS settings you need for this and just set it up in our control panel if you want to do it that way.

I transferred a domain, I sold, away to another registrar. It's been about 3 weeks, and it's made it to the other side, but I'm still seeing it listed on my Hover account.

It will still show in your list of Hover domains, but the status should show as "cancelled" until the expiration date we had on file. It will then disappear from your account altogether.
