This tutorial will step you through preparing a domain at 1&1 for a transfer to Hover.

To transfer your domain from 1&1 to Hover, please complete the following steps:

  1. Visit http://1and1.com and click on the Customer Login link.

  2. Log in with your customer ID and password.

  3. Click on the drop down menu button located beside Start then click on Domains & Webspace.

  4. Click on the Domains link

  5. Put a check next to the domain name to be transferred, click on the arrow next to the Contact button, and select Show Contact Details.

  6. Under Domain Contact Details, check whether the User Data and Administrative Contact email addresses are up to date.  If domain privacy is enabled, you will only see the User Data email contact information.  If your contact information is current, then you can skip to step 20 - Unlock Your Domain Name.

  7. Click on the drop down menu button located beside Start then click on Domains & Webspace.

  8. Click on the Domains link.

  9. If you need to update your domain contact information, then domain privacy must be disabled.  While privacy is enabled, contact handles for the domain cannot be edited.  Click on the arrow next to Contact and select Private/Public Registration.  Skip to step 15 "Update Domain Contacts - Domain Registration Public" if your registration is not set to private.

  10. Select Public and click OK.

  11. From the Data Source drop-down list, select "Let me use an alternate Reg-C" then enter your contact information.

Put a check next to “I am aware that I am conducting a change of ownership of the domain(s) and confirm that this is made with the consent of or at the request of the current owner (registrant; Reg-C)” and select “Use this data for the administrative (Admin-C) and technical (Tech-C) domain contact details.”

    Click Next.

  12. Scroll down the Domain Contact Details Overview screen and click Submit at the bottom.

  13. Click on Go To Overview.

  14. The domain status will change to updating until the changes have propagated.  You may be unable to make further changes until the domain status is set to “Ready” again.

    Click Next.

  17. Scroll down the Domain Contact Details Overview screen and click Submit at the bottom.

  18. Click on Go To Overview.

  19. The domain status will change to updating until the changes have propagated.  You may be unable to make further changes until the domain status is set to “Ready” again.

    Unlock Your Domain Name

  20. Click on the arrow next to Transfers and select Lock/Unlock.

  21. Change the Status to Unlock, then click OK.

  22. Click Go To Overview.

  23. Put a check next to the domain name then click on Info.

  24. Record your domain auth code.

  25. If you made changes to your domain contact information, use a WHOIS look up tool to verify that the new contact information has propagated.  Changes to domain names might take a couple of hours to appear.  You can perform a WHOIS look up using the following websites:  http://www.smartwhois.com or http://whois.domaintools.com.

Now that your domain is prepared for the transfer, you can start the process of bringing the domain to Hover.  Complete the following steps to purchase Hover services for the domain and initiate the transfer request:

  1.  Visit http://www.hover.com and click on Transfer to Hover.

Or, If you are an existing customer, sign in to your Hover account at https://www.hover.com/signin and click on the + Add New button and then click on the + Transfer a domain to Hover link, as pictured below.

    Single Domain View

  2. Type the domain name to be transferred in the text box and click on the Check or Search button (the button name will vary depending on whether you are initiating the transfer from within an account or from the main Hover page).

  3. A step-by-step transfer process screen will appear.  The question mark icon will link you to a help tutorial.

Depending on your registration service provider, there will be up to 3 steps listed:

    1. Domain privacy status.
    2. Admin email confirmation.
    3. Domain lock status.

If the step has a red X in the status then this indicates that the step needs to be completed to continue.  A green check indicates that the step has been completed.

Click on Send test email to confirm the admin email address.

  4. Open your email, find a message with an "agree" button you must click after entering your initials.  If the button does not work,  you can use the link just below "This form is also available on the hover.com website".  Once verified you will be redirected to the transfer-in page on hover.com.

  5. Once there are green checks next to each status item, click on the plus (+) to add the domain name to your shopping cart.

  6. Under your Cart click on the Continue to Checkout button.

  7. Enter your transfer authorization code (also called an EPP key) in the text box and then click on Checkout.

  8. If you are not already signed into a Hover account you will see the following screen to create an account or sign in:

If you already have an account, click on Sign in to sign in with your Hover username and password.  New customers need to provide their name, a contact email address, then pick a username and password for their Hover account.  If you are a new customer, click Create Account after typing in all the required details.
  9. Fill out your name and address as you would like them to appear in your domain registration records.

  10. Scroll down and put a check next to "Do not make my contact information public" if you want you information to remain private.  Click Continue.

  11. Billing information needs to be provided next.  You can use your existing credit card if you already have an account with billing information, or select Use a different card if you want to use a new credit card. (PayPal is not available for domain transfers)

  12. Fill in your name and address as they appear on your credit card statements, then scroll down and enter your credit card number, card security code (CVV), and expiration date.  Click Continue when finished.

  13. Put a check next to I have read and agree to the Terms of Service and then click on Purchase Now.

  14. Your domain status will listed as pending until the transfer has been completed.

1and1 will hold domains for 5 days before approving the transfer out so the total transfer time could be as much as 7 days from start to finish for everything to complete.

I just got confirmation that my domain transfer from 1&1 was complete, but when I log into the 1&1 control panel I still see the domain listed.  Is this expected or are there additional steps I need to complete on the 1&1 side once everything was transferred to Hover?

Hi Matthew - 1&1 will keep services active even after a transfer out for customers using their DNS or hosting.  If you don't have any 1&1 services that you plan to keep using then you should make sure you are not set up to have any 1&1 domain services renewed automatically.

Hi Sean, of course you can. To do so, click on your domain and select "NO" next to "Show Public Contact Details."

I initiated my transfer per these instructions. On my 1-and-1 control panel, I see an option under the "Transfer" drop down that says "Start Transfer". Should I do this? Will this expedite the 7 day wait period to make my transfer complete sooner?

Hey Mike, That button sounds like it may be to initiate a transfer into 1-and-1.  There isn't an option to expedite from 1-and-1.
