This tutorial will guide you through configuring your Hover email in Apple Mail version 3.5 or 4.1 using IMAP.
Please note: do not setup the email account through "System Preferences." The account should be setup in Apple Mail.
To configure Apple Mail, please complete the following steps:
The outgoing server information seems to be incorrect / incomplete.
Where are the full settings for the outgoing mail server (I.E. screenshots, from the "Edit SMTP Server List..." screen)?
Step 5 in the tutorial shows our outgoing mail server settings. If you set the option to use only our server, it shouldn't be necessary to manually edit the SMTP server list. Thanks a lot. I've tried again on Apple Mail, but just before I'm finished, I'm told that «mail.hover.com» rejects my password. I'm quite sure I've written the password correctly.
Having the same problem as Rolf Theil....does he know why this is happening?
I suggest resetting your email password then contact customer service if that doesn't do the trick. Click here for a tutorial on how to change an email password in Hover.

Trying to setup with IMAP as well and Hover keeps rejecting my password. It says I can set it up insecurely but I definitely don't want this.

Hi Michael - I checked your email accounts and it looks like IMAP is enabled. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
- the user name to log into our mail server needs to be entered as your full email address. The mail program might be truncating the @yourdomainname.com portion of your email address. This would cause an authentication error.
- to make sure you have the correct password, try logging into webmail at https://mail.hover.com If you can't log into webmail, try changing your email password. Instructions can be found here: http://help.hover.com/entries/21262082-how-to-change-your-email-pas...
- a secure connection using SSL requires ports 993 and 465 to be open. If you are behind a firewall, make sure it isn't blocking these ports. This could cause the mail app to only allow you to set up without using SSL. If you aren't sure, your Internet provider may be able to help you troubleshoot for port blocks.
I hope these suggestions fix this for you. Don't hesitate to open a support ticket if you are still stuck.
Hi Karen - your email log in issue would not be related to your domain name being registered through Hover. If your email is with a third party, the sign in is being managed by your Mail program and your email host's mail server.
I have heard reports of people having general problems sending/receiving email after upgrading to to Mountain Lion. These links might help:

Your email host may have more suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue, or they could go through your email server settings to check whether the Mountain Lion upgrade clobbered any settings.
I configured Hover email in Apple Mail. I also sent some mails to my friends but I couldn't get any mails from them. They sent mails to my Hover email but no one came. My mail type is Classic.
Could you inform me about that?
It looks like the problem was that your DNS wasn't properly set up for you to receive email, however, I can see Joel was able to get that sorted out for you last night, and your email should be coming through now. :)
I just set up my hover mail in Apple Mail as POP mail and it is working fine. I have several different email accounts and several different devices and it's always a little bit tricky to get everything to work together the way I want. The one feature I would like to see with Hover POP is to have my outgoing email automatically saved to hover webmail. That way other devices that check using IMAP can see the mail I sent from my Mac. Is there any way to make mail.hover.com automatically save sent POP mail?
That can only be done if you're using IMAP, Bruce. There's no way to do that with POP.
If I have setup my Mail on my mac to use IMAP, should sent mails also sync to the webmail portal for viewing? Currently it shows no messages in Webmail so not sure that messages are actually sending. Sending a test message seems to have worked but my Mail also stated that is has had trouble connecting to the server so have turned SSL off which seems to have fixed the problem.
Hi Mark, are you referring to Mac Mail? If so, I believe there is an issue with Mac Mail which does not use the "sent" folder on our server to store sent messages even though you have configured for IMAP. Mac Mail will store the sent messages locally. Can you try the following?
- Click on your "Sent" folder
- From the Menu bar, click "Mailbox"
- Select "Use This Mailbox For" and then select "Sent"
This should tell Mac Mail to use the "Sent" folder on our server to store your sent messages.
Hi Brennan,Thanks for your reply. It seems that Mac Mail does use the Sent folder but when check through Hover webmail there's a secondary Sent folder that's been created and that's where they end up. Everything seems to be working now though.
I cannot set up my Hover email in Mac Mail - same problem of password or username not being recognised - have changed password in Hover, but still not working. Can you advise.
Sarah, there are two passwords you can change in Hover, the control panel login and the email password. Double-check that it was actually the email password (under the Email tab in the control panel) rather than the general login password (which is under Settings in the control panel) that you changed.
I have just done this but it is still not working - keeps saying hover server offline

I am suffering the same problem - the outgoing mail server (SMTP) is listed as "mail.hover.com (Offline)" with no other choices / options available. I have gone in and re-set the password to no avail. Any thoughts? (Note: we have 3 new iMacs in 3 locations for my wife and I am trying to configure them all the same so she can receive her mail from any of the 3 iMacs. The first one I set up works, but the second one has this Offline issue).

Hi Alex, under the Incoming Mail Server screen, do you have your email address entered as the "username?" Also, can you re-type your password into the set-up just in case there was a typo? Sometimes a space after the password can throw things off. If you're still experiencing problems, shoot us an email or give us a call so we can help troubleshoot with you.
I'm getting this error:
"The Trash mailbox could not be created on the mail server. The local “Deleted Messages (Work)” mailbox was created instead."
"Mail has changed your account’s Mailbox Behaviors preferences to use the local “Deleted Messages (Work)” mailbox."
@Andrew, something may not have configured properly. Everything looks good on our side, I would remove the email address from Apple Mail, then re-add the address. If you need a hand, give us a shout tomorrow and one of our support staff will walk you through setup.
I can't seem to receive emails to my hover email, either through the webmail or on Apple Mail. I've followed the advice on these comments but no luck so far. I've just managed to get sending emails sorted again, but I don't know why this has become a problem now because I've never had this issue before...

I've followed the steps above to set up my wife's email, and things are working but it takes a very very long time to connect to the server everytime an email is sent out.
My email account on the other hands connects within seconds of me sending an email.

Hello, suddenly I am having problems getting mail via the incoming server but do send ok via de outgoing server. What's wrong ? Got a strange problem: i can receive and send from my Hover's email account from my Iphone but i can't from my MacBook, using Apple Mail.
And i have the same settings on both devices.
Here's the error message i have, it's in French :
"Le serveur a renvoyé l’erreur La connexion au serveur « mail.hover.com » sur le port 993 a expiré."

I have the exact same problem as nicolas. Hover email works on iphones and Thunderbird from Windows, but as of about a week ago, I cannot connect to the hover account via Apple mail on an iMac and a MacBook.
Connection to mail.hover.com times out on port 993.
Harald, are you using Avast! Antivirus by any chance? About a week ago they seem to have made an update to their Mail Shield which seems to be blocking mail.hover.com. If you are, you may need to disable that option to resolve the issue.

We don't have a point of contact with Avast! (or other antivirus companies), but as their customer you're welcome to contact them for more information as to why they'd be blocking us or any other service you use that they may be blocking.
I am using Apple mail and have recently upgraded to the Mavericks operating system on my laptop and OS 7.0.3 on my iPhone. I have been having lots of trouble the past few days trying to send mail, and now, receiving email. Can you help? Thanks!!
I just bought the Classic Mail (5 mailboxes) tonight and I'm having the same issue has Ann. I've tested it on my iPhone and I can both send and received emails, but on my Mac mini I can only receive emails. When I try and send an email I receive an error. The one difference I know of is that in Apple Mail on the outgoing setup I only put mail.hover.com. I did not put in username or password, as it gave a warning saying that the information would be unencrypted, which I did not want to do. Plus, on outgoing username and password were optional.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The username and password actually are required for sending mail through Hover. Just be sure to use SSL and the username/password will be encrypted. If adding the username/password doesn't help, however, please do let us know.
Hi everybody, I had some trouble with this same issue - my Hover email had hung on the send/receive of messages for a few days. A bit of a google search got me here. I'm not sure if it's related to Mavericks, but when I forced my outgoing SMTP mail server to use "Custom Port 465" everything started flowing again.

I simply cannot configure my Hover email account (IMAP) on a brand new Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks OS. It won't go online and times out. (My iCloud mail account works just fine)
I promise you, these things don't normally phase me - I have Hover mail successfully configured on an iMac, a MacPro, my wife's MacBook, an iPad and an iPhone.
I've tried every combination of SSL Port etc - no luck. There must be something funky going on with Mavericks or Hover - Help!!!
Mark, it looks as though you've already managed to resolve the issue, from what I can see in our system, but let us know if you have any other questions.
I'm also running Mavericks OS like Mark, but on a non-retina Macbook Air, and I seem to be having problems connecting as well. Both 993 and 465 seem to be throwing some sort of error.
- 993 continues to ask me for my password (and I know it's right)- 465 seems like it's connecting but times out eventually. I have to make any changes to the port number first and then close Apple Mail for it to save. Simply saving the new changes seems to keep trying 465.
Hi Daniel, we'll be sending you an e-mail right away to troubleshoot your Apple Mail. There are no compatibility issues with Hover and Apple Mail, so hopefully we can get this sorted out soon.
You need to update your How-To. You have to go into the SMTP server list, then edit how it connects, pull down a little menu in the dialog box and connect with password, then put in your hovermail user name and password.

The SMTP URL is mail.hover.com - not smtp.hover.com
Yeah I just spent a day trying to troubleshoot different ports and SSL settings. Turns out I'm an idiot.
Using Mail 7.0 with mavericks. No joy.
iPhone works fine with my hover account. Have followed at above direction. "mail cannot connect to account...." "enter password"......No joy. everything is correct and has been done at least three different times. see pic... guidance plez
The first error on the list mentions Port 0 ??
Set up the custom port for the SMPT server as 465 with SSL.
(Pick a mailbox in Mail prefs, choose the Outgoing Mail Server SMTP, Edit SMTP Server List from the dropdown, go to Advanced for the account you are setting up.)

Hi, I have been having a lot of trouble with my Hover email. I have entered all the info correctly as per the instruction above and sometimes it works fine... but often I will suddenly get an error message in Mail saying the password for this email account has been rejected. It continues to tell me the password is incorrect when it definitely isn't. I am using exactly the same password to log into the Webmail on hover.com with no troubles at all. HOWEVER I am kind of concerned because in Webmail, my inbox is completely empty. I sent a test email from another address to this address and it has not showed up in my Hover webmail.
This is very worrying as this is my main work email! please help me with this.
And I haven't yet been able to make this email work at all on my iPhone.
Oh an extra note which may help - I can successfully send emails FROM my Hover address through Mail, but not receive them... and now the error message is stopping all completely.
On my iPhone, even though I followed your instructions exactly on your Configure For iPhone instruction page, at first it won't save as it says the username & password are incorrect... and then it lets me save but warns "this account may not be able to send or receive any messages".
Please contact me ASAP to fix this - on my secondary email address email@example.com as it seems I won't be able to receive emails to my Hover account...
Hey everyone, I just want to let you all know what my problem was (as it may be affecting you as well). I found out that you cannot have spaces in your password. While it works fine in webmail, Apple mail can't handle it.
Sigh. I WISH I had spaces in my password so I knew this was an easy fix. But I don't :(

I have just signed up and am having some similar problems. I am able to use Hover on my iPhone without problem but can't use it in Mail. I keep getting "access denied" for the recipient address. Regardless of who I try to send the email too, I get the same response.
I have tried both the hover account and a hotmail account and something is blocking them both. see the attached screen shot

I've been having a lot of trouble with Hover email lately,too. I use Apple Mail. Have had nor problem for the past year or so. Have not changed any settings or upgraded any software or changed OS. Similar to Brian Seitz's comment above, I keep getting "cannot send message using the server mail.hover.hover." Also, I am not receiving emails from a number of clients. The only way I can use Hover mail semi-reliably is through the Hover Mail web page. Occasionally when I am using this Hover web client for email, emails I am trying to send will not go through. They are blocked with a message stating a "virus has been detected in the email you are trying to send". Please help!
I think I've seen this sort of thing happen before with other services. From what I recall, email servers were hacked, which caused them to be "blacklisted" by a number of third party spam services. Even though the hack was fixed, the servers continued to be blacklisted. This may be why we can email some people without problem, while emails to others are rejected; it depends on which spam detection services are being used by the address we are trying to email to. Can someone from Hover hop on here and explain what's going on? Doesn't seem to be an isolated problem.

I am having an issue. When I try to send an e-mail from my iCloud account to my hover account the delivery fails, citing illegal host/domain as the reason. This is the only combination that will not work, as I can send e-mail successfully back and forth from my g-mail, university mail, and hover webmail accounts.
