How To: Update domain registration records

Tyson Acker
posted this on April 04, 2012 23:04

This tutorial will show you how to edit the contact information stored in your domain registration records.

Please note that the Owner and Admin contacts are authorized to make administrative changes to the domain name.  If the admin is separate from the owner, make sure they are someone who you trust to have control over your domain name.  The Tech contact does not have any rights to access your domain name or Hover account.

To update your domain contacts, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Hover account online at https://www.hover.com/signin
  2. If you have more than one domain name in your account, click on the domain name that you want to update.

  3. Click on the Edit button next to the domain contact that you want to modify.

  4. Type in your new contact details and then click on Save.

When I follow this procedure I get an error message saying it has not updated. I think the error is 004. For what reason might I not be able to change this information?

Some top-level domain names, especially country-code top-level domains like .de, .ca, .eu, etc., have specific residency requirements and restricted words that cannot be entered as a name, like domain admin or customer service.  If you give us a call or send us an email, we can help get to the bottom of what is causing the error in your specific circumstance.  You can also click here for general information on the requirements of different top-level domains.

I get a Code 404 error when I try to update my Organization info for my (just purchased) .eu domain (dahb.eu). The Organization name is the same as my name but I would much prefer to leave it blank (this wasn't possible during registration) and to switch to another (EU country code) phone number. Is either change possible?

Hi Arno - You are able to change this information, however I may need to help with this.  Could you send email email to help@hover.com so you can provide me with some more details?  I'll get this updated from here.

Are both Owner and Admin addresses hidden to the public?

Hi Matthew,

Yes.  When you have Whois privacy enabled, none of your registration records are displayed publicly.  To turn privacy on or off, there's two places you can do this:

From the "Manage your domains" page, you can hover over your domain name and choose "make public" or "make private".

OR

From the "Manage your Domains" page, click on a domain (which takes you to the "Domain Details".  From here, you can choose "yes" or "no" next to "Show Public Contact Details".

Is there a way to apply a changed name/address to all of the domains in our account at once ? Or do I have to re-type this info over and over for the 'Admin' and 'Owner' for each of our domains ?

thanks,

And I see now - I just select the domains I want to update with the check-boxes, and click on 'Bulk Edit' on the right. Very simple !

I can't update the phone number. When I enter +852.12345678, it keeps saying: "Please enter at least 4 characters". Anything wrong with my phone number?

How can I update the BILLING contact? It is incorrect in the WHOIS record that you e.iled me, but when I log in to hover.com I can only update Owner, Admin, and Technical.

Are you referring to the name that appears in the top left of the invoices found under the Activity Tab? If so, we've sent you an email so we can verify your ownership and update your billing info.

Brennan, the invoices are correct. I'm talking about the annual email from hover.com required by ICANN to confirm my WHOIS data. I received that email reminder today. The body of the email lists the WHOIS contact information for Owner, Administrative contact, Billing contact, and Technical contact. In the email, the Billing contact information is incorrect: it lists the person who originally registered the domain with Network Solutions many many years ago, but who is now dead. I can't find a way to correct that info on my hover.com account.

How does one go about updating the technical contact information? Mine was last updated back in the domaindirect days and hence the address is totally wrong now (it is not even the correct country).

Hi Ruari, if you need the technical information updated, you'll want to contact us directly. It's not something that's available through Hover.com

I'm trying to do a bulk update for the Owner and Admin of all my domains. I pick Canada as the country, but the Province/State dropdown box only shows US states and not Canadian provinces.

Hi there,

Same problem as Myles here (Countries other than US don't have proper or editable provinces).

Also got a modification failed code 400 on editing a single domain record.

Would be nice if the bulk edit form was able to pull the details from those defined in the account's settings.

Loïc
