This tutorial will show you how to set up your Hover email on your iPhone or iPad. The process is the same in iPhone and iPad, though it can differ slightly depending on the model and iOS.

The following sections explain how to set up your email on various iOS versions. You can click one of these links to go directly to that section:

iOS 7.0

1.Tap Settings on your home screen.

2. Scroll down, and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

3. Tap Add Account.

4. Tap Other.

5. Tap Add Mail Account.

6. Enter the following information, and then tap Next:

  • Name: Enter your name as you want it to appear when you send email.
  • Address: Enter your full Hover email address.
  • Password: Enter your Hover email password.
  • Description: This will be used to identify this email account on your iPhone or iPad. You can enter anything you like here.

The Hover email service supports both IMAP and POP. We recommend that you choose IMAP because it will keep messages in sync between your iPhone or iPad any other computers or devices that you use with IMAP to access your email account. The settings that follow are the same for both IMAP and POP.

7. In both the Incoming Mail Server and the Outgoing Mail Server sections, enter the following information, and then tap Next:

  • Host Name: Enter mail.hover.com
  • User Name: Enter your full Hover email address.
  • Password: Enter your Hover email password.

Your device now verifies your email account settings. Be patient, as this may take several minutes.

If you receive an error indicating that you Cannot Connect Using SSL, just tap Yes to continue without SSL.

8. Make sure that Mail is turned on and Notes is turned off, and then click Save.

Your IMAP account displays a status message that it has configured sync. This screen will only appear for a few seconds.

Your email account configuration is complete!

Why do you not support Push?

We do not have a push feature at this time.  Using IMAP4, your iPhone will fetch new messages automatically and keep folders and messages synchronized between your phone and our mail server.

iPhone and iPad support for push mail is currently limited to Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail, and Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync platform.

You can adjust how frequently you check for new email on your iPhone.  To do this, tap Settings on the iPhone's Home screen.  Select Fetch New Data and then pick the desired mail checking interval for your account under Fetch.

To preserve battery life, the iPhone will not check for new messages more than every 15 minutes.  There are third party apps that will force your iPhone to check for new email every minute but they have a reputation for killing battery life.  If you need to receive new messages more frequently then you could forward a copy of your Hover email messages to a free Yahoo!, Hotmail, or Gmail address that is configured on your iPhone.  Click here for an email forwarding tutorial.

Push-IMAP is a proposed solution for IMAP4 mail servers.  Push-IMAP hasn't been generally accepted and there is no ETA on when we might support Push-IMAP or when/if it will be supported by mobile devices like the iPhone.  It's a space we're watching and push would be a great feature for our iPhone users.

Hi,

I need to be sure. I'm using Outlook POP3 account on my laptop to send and receive emails. If I setup my iphone with IMAP account. will I be able to sync emails  with my outlook account on my laptop? or when I receive or send emails from my iphone, I'll never see it in my outlook account?

I can send mail from anywhere OK, but I can only recieve mail when I have a wifi connection. When i dont have wifi I get a message on my iphone: no internet connection available.  Am I missing a setting on my iphone?

Hi Elisabeth - if you want to keep messages synced, it would be best to use IMAP in both Outlook and on your phone.  If your Outlook POP3 account is set to leave messages on our server, your iPhone using IMAP will see the same inbox messages.  Sent messages will not be synced unless both are using IMAP.  I suggest giving us a call if you need help sorting out the settings on both clients.

Hi Angus - If you get a message that no Internet connection is available then it sounds like a problem with the 3G/4G or LTE connection provided by your cell phone carrier.  I suggest contacting your cell service provider to find out why you get that error when wifi isn't on.

I am receving an error message saying that the meail has been rejsected because it does not allow "relaying".  This just started again last night although i have had this probelm before.  What is causing this and how can I fix it?  Thank you!

Hi Reg - The message "does not allow relaying" means that your email address is not able to send email.  There must be something that has caused your account to no longer be able to send emails.  There are a few thing that could cause this.  I just had a look and found a ticket you sent us about this so I'll do a bit of research here for you and get back to you in that ticket.

Hi Richard - I tested your account and it is able to send email. It is most likely that you do not have authentication enabled in your outgoing server settings.  Here are steps to fix the error from the main screen:

1.  Tap Settings.
2.  Scroll down and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3.  Under Accounts, tap your Hover email account.
4.  Your Hover email address should be listed Under POP or IMAP.  Tap your Hover email address.
5.  Scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and then tap SMTP.
6.  Under Primary Server you should see our mail server listed as mail.hover.com and it should be set to ON.  Tap mail.hover.com.
7.  Ensure you have the following settings entered:

Host Name:  mail.hover.com
User Name:  enter your full email address
Password:  enter the same password that you use for receiving email
Use SSL:  can be On or Off
Authentication:  Password should be selected (tap and select password if Authentication is not set to password)
Server port:  465 if SSL is ON, 587 if SSL is OFF

8.  Tap done and wait for the settings to be verified.

Seriously, you might want to update for ios6.  While you're at it, it would be a good idea to indicate that the procedure is the same for ipad.

Have tried to set up my hover mail on my new iphone5 - can receive emails but not send. get error message 'was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying'. Have tried the various port settings (was 993, then 995 now on 465) but this has not helped. Successful received emails were on incoming server 'mail.thecampbells.com' whilst outgoing settings on mail.hover.com. Tried changing outgoing to mail.hover.com but did not help. Any ideas?? What is your email email to address?

Hi Michele, you can reach us at help@hover.com. If you are using POP3, you'd want to use 995 with SSL enabled or 110 with SSL disabled. For IMAP, you can try 993 with SSL enabled or 143 with it disabled. You'd also want to keep both incoming and outgoing mail servers as mail.hover.com.

getmail.domainname.com and sendmail.domainname.com or mail.hover.com?  I seen both ways work.  Also now that iOS 7 is available can we get the this web page updated.  You instructions are from iOS 4.

Hey Patricia, we recommend mail.hover.com for both incoming and outgoing servers. Also, thanks for the suggestion, we will be looking into updating these posts as soon as we take care of a few other things.

In a word: USELESS!  These setup directions simply don't work, at least no on an iPhone 5s with iOS 7. I have tried reentering acct info at least a dozen times, including deleting account and starting over.

IT DOES NOT WORK!!

OK! Just called help desk. They answered immediately - no hold time. We went over the settings to be sure I was inputting correctly. Then he has me log in to my account and refresh the password.

Went back to the phone and tried again. It worked!. Great customer support!

hello. I have tried to set this email up about 5 times on my iphone 5. I am able to recieve messages but when i go to respond or draft a new message it doesnt allow it to be sent. instead it just sits in my outbox. a message apears "password or username is incorrect" but i am sure they are both right, as i have logged on on my macbook using the supplied email and password and it accepts it. HELP!!

Cassidy, you'll need to make sure you have outgoing authentication enabled as well. In your account settings, go to Outgoing Mail Server SMTP, select the Primary Server, and make sure it has the correct username and password there as well (full email address for username). Also, make sure SSL is on, Authentication is set to Password, and Server Port is 465. That should do it, but you may need to re-enter the messages you were trying to send.

It is just for appearance' sake, but you really should update the headline to reflect that these instructions work for iOS 6 and iOS7. The headline seems quite out of date, two iterations ago.

Hi Gregory, I'm glad to hear you were able to get e-mail set up. To answer your question, currently our webmail system doesn't have a calendar that can be integrated into an iPhone. We don't have a CalDAV interface. Thanks for the question!

Hi, none of my emails work today. I was wondering the reliability of this system. Is it safer to just use gmail? Can you please check the settings on my account to see if something was changed. I tried to reset everything but I am not being able to send or receive anything from Hover's emails for both of my sites. It is extremely important to have a very reliable email since I receive emails for my business and they are time sensitive.

Please advise if its either the set up or the your server problems.

Thanks.

thanks

Hi,even though I followed your instructions exactly, at first it won't save as it says the username & password are incorrect... and then it lets me save but warns "this account may not be able to send or receive any messages".

This may be related to the fact that on Apple Mail on my computer I am also receiving an error message stating that the server has rejected my password even though I am positive I am entering it correctly and have all the correct settings entered too.

Please contact me ASAP to fix this - on my secondary email address tilleysong@gmail.com as it seems I won't be able to receive emails to my Hover account...
