How to: Change your domain name servers (DNS servers)

Tyson Acker
posted this on March 27, 2012 09:27

Domain Name Servers (also known as DNS servers) are used to point your domain name at your email provider, domain forwarding service, and/or web host provider.  This tutorial will show you how to point your domain name at specific name servers, such as name servers provided by your web host.

If you need to point a domain name at Hover to use our DNS services, please use the following name servers:

ns1.hover.com
ns2.hover.com
ns3.hover.com

Change Your Name Servers - Single Domain

  1. Log into your Hover account online at https://www.hover.com/login.
  2. If you have more than one domain name listed in your account, click on the domain name that you want to use with customized DNS records.  This will take you to its Domain Details page.

  3. Click on the Edit button in the Nameservers section.

  4. Your existing name servers will be displayed in the text boxes.  Type your new name servers into the text boxes and click on Save

If you need additional name server text boxes click on the Add button.

Change Your Name Servers - Multiple Domains

To change name servers for multiple domains in your account, complete the following steps:

  1. Under the Name Servers tab, put a check next to each domain name that you want to modify, then select Replace Nameservers from the drop down list and click on Batch Edit.

  2. Enter your new name servers and click on Save.  Use the Add button for more text boxes if you need to use more than two name servers.

I am having the same issue ... getting the Hover site that says "This user has not enabled any redirections." I've never seen this before with any of the domains we have registered here, so I'm a bit confused.

Changes to your domain's name servers takes time to propagate because your Internet provider keeps a cache, or memory, of websites that have been visited recently.  It can take anywhere from just 15 minutes to 48 hours before your Internet provider will update its cache and start using your domain's new name servers.  Usually it just takes a few hours.

The Hover page that displays "This user has not enabled any redirection" is a default page that comes up for any domains using our name servers with our default DNS records.  We have it set this way so people who just want to set up domain forwards don't have to mess around with any DNS settings.

Don't hesitate to contact us if you need one on one help getting your name servers and DNS sorted out to point at your web host.

I'm getting that same "This user has not enabled any redirections" message but only when trying to visit the site without the www prefix. If I go to the site with www at the beginning of the address everything is great, without the www I get the Hover placeholder. I've never had that issue before where it works one way and not the other.

Hi Michelle - this looks like DNS caching as well.  I tested your domain with and without the "www" host and it looks like the domain is set up correctly.  I'll be following up with you shortly to give you more specific details about your domain name.

Hi Tyson, is there any way to completely disable the default page that says "This user has not enabled any redirection"? I rather not have my domain show any page if I don't have a home for it. Thanks in advance.

Hi Luis - you could simply forward your domain name to another website (or another domain name you own).  For a completely blank website, here's a trick:  create a stealth redirection to http://www.google.com (Google won't display when loaded in a stealth frame so you'll see a completely blank page).

Here's our forwarding tutorial:  https://help.hover.com/entries/21196383-how-to-forward-your-domain-...

Hi Allison - Hover domain names can be used with any web hosting service.  You would need to edit your DNS records in Hover to point at iWeb.  Click here for our tutorial on editing DNS records.

MobileMe has been closed by Apple so I suggest verifying with Apple that you can still set up a new domain on iWeb. Please give us a call or send us an email for one on one help with configuring your domain name's DNS or answering more specific questions.

Just a suggestion, but it would be nice to have a one-click option so users can update the nameservers of a domain that's been transferred in to the Hover servers. It would save some time on updating domains that are "parked" or forwarded.

Hi David - When I visit your domain I see your website for Calgary's Premiere Dance School. Your ISP may be unusually slow updating their cached DNS, or it may just be a case of web browser caching. If you need help checking deeper into this ASAP, I suggest giving us a phone call.

I am having a huge problem with trying to get my website working.  I signed up with webhostinghub.com for hosting abilities.  When I install a Wordpress blog, it won't find the admin page.

I changed the nameservers to point to webhostinghub.com, but did I miss anything else?

Hi Brian - I think you did the right thing by setting your name servers to webhostinghub.com. All four of your domain names have zone files on the webhostinghub.com name servers.  I did DNS look ups and found that those name servers are pointing all four domains at a hosting server at this IP address - 205.134.224.171.

From the information you've provided, my assumption would be that there is an issue with the installation of your Wordpress script. Your web host may be able to give you better assistance because they can see your configuration on their end.

Hi Callum - What this means is that all the various domain registries do not recognize the custom name servers you've created.  I can help you with that.  I just found your account and sent you an email asking for the custom name servers you're trying to update so I can add them to all the foreign registries for you.  Please get back to me in that email when you have a minute.

Hi Kent - I'm seeing that all registries do have the bluehost.com name servers listed at all registries that we support and if you're still having issues applying a name server to a domain name, there may be something else going on that we may need to look at. Fire us an email at help@hover.com or shoot us an email and we'll be happy to track down the problem for you and get it fixed up.

Is it not possible to set name servers for domain transfers in advance?

If this is not possible and I will only be able to change the name servers after they are transferred (resulting in a 24-48 hour propagation period), I am going to be incredibly angry. I really hope something as important as this feature has not been overlooked.

Hi Aaron,

Name servers can be reset at your current domain provider before you transfer the domains.  That's the best way to do it.  Once a transfer is in progress between providers the name servers and DNS can't be modified.  If you have custom DNS on your current provider's name servers and you want to have that set up on our servers ahead of time, then you will have to give us a call or send us an email and we can certainly help you out with that.  Not a problem at all.  We will set up a zone file on our servers for your domain and then have you update your name servers to point to hover ahead of the transfer.  Once these changes take effect you can then transfer the domains over.

The reason why it's best to make these changes before you start a transfer is because if you were to change them during the transfer, or even just before initiating the transfer, you may still experience down time if the old domain provider shuts off your DNS servers right away, as many of them will.

Having the zone file set up ahead of time will prevent that from happening.  We do this for people as part of our valet transfer service.

hi,

I have recently transferred my domain www.utsav-collections.com from ASP Hosting services to Hover and I am trying to link this to my store front with Shopify. I have followed all the instructions on https://help.hover.com/entries/21332553-How-to-Use-your-domain-with-Shopify . But still the website is taking me to the original page I had with ASP and not my shopify page. Please help .

Hi Poulami,

I've gone ahead fixed this for. So you know, the only change I had to make setting it so utsav-collections.com forwards to www.utsav-collections.com (which was already pointing at Shopify).

I hope that helps, and good luck putting your store together!

Hi. My transfer from Network Solutions is pending. Meanwhile, while my domain was registered at network solutions, it's hosted somewhere else (Pair Networks). Thus, currently on Network Solutions, the domain points to NS000.NS0.COM  and NS213.PAIR.COM. So my first question is this: will my domain continue to point to Pair Networks when the transfer is complete? If not, what do I do to get it to continue to point there? Name servers don't seem to be part of the Domain Details while the transfer is pending.

Second, once it does point there, Pair Networks currently has a whole set of DNS entries including MX records for Gmail etc. that I'd like to keep as is. Will those continue to work, or will the list of Hover DNS records take precedence? Thanks for your help.

Tom

@Thomas

All is well.

When you transfer a domain to Hover, the nameservers remain as they were when the transfer completes. Thus your Pair info will all remain in place, and you won't have to change a thing.

Hi,

I've got this bizarre situation going on. So I've set my domains with Mammoth's webserver's and the way it works is that I can't put "www." in front of my domain, it will only work without it.

What could this possibly mean?

That is something you'd have to discuss with Mammoth, since they have control of your DNS now. It's likely they just need to add a www CNAME or A Record though.

Hi Aaron, you can absolutely keep Hover email when using third-party name servers. Just provide your current host with our MX records.

  • Record Type: MX
  • Host: @
  • Value/Target: mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.com
  • Priority: 10

I am trying to use Amazon's Route 53 as my DNS. I think I configured the Amazon end correctly but it is not resolving. The domain is lisamagary.com. I don't want to forward the domain because it is messing up the <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width"> tag and causing it to not scale properly on iOS browsers.

My question is have I properly completed the following step from the Route 53 instructions?

"Before you switch to Amazon Route 53 as your DNS provider, you must transfer any remaining DNS records from your current DNS provider, including MX records, CNAME records, and A records, to Amazon Route 53. "

How do I transfer those from Hover? I tried to do so but my have done it wrong.

It looks like you've pointed the lisamagary.com domain at the following name servers:

ns-1125.awsdns-12.org | ns-1686.awsdns-18.co.uk | ns-417.awsdns-52.com | ns-874.awsdns-45.net

If those are the name servers that Amazon gave you then you did it correctly. Keep in mind it can take up to 48 hours for the name server changes to propagate fully and be recognized across the Internet.

Hello,

Changed our Name Servers over to: ns1.leagueathletics.com and ns2.leagueathletics.com. I also notified LeagueAthletics to update things on their end a couple days ago. Based on your previous posts, I'm afraid I just have to wait for 2 days?! Just making sure there's not something else I can do to speed this up.  Our little league online registration is unfortunately on hold for as long as it takes to "propagate".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,

Scott

Hi Michie,

As per their instructions, yes, you'll need to copy over all your current DNS records from your Hover DNS zone file so it's updated on your Amazon name servers.  You don't have to worry about that "mail" CNAME record, as that's just one of our defaults. You're not using Hover email so it doesn't matter.

Let us know if you have any trouble with this.

Hi Mark,

That's correct.  When you update name servers anywhere, not just Hover, it can take 24-48 hours for the name server changes to propagate across the internet.  This isn't something that can be controlled, it's just the approximate time it takes for name server changes to take effect.

Let us know if you have any other issue or need help with anything else.

I recently changed webhosts, and so of course I had to change nameservers to reflect this. I encountered the error, "Nameserver does not exist at the registry (code: 480)", to which I found this page, and read through the other comments by other people who have encountered this problem.

On a whim, before submitting a help desk ticket to have my domains' nameservers manually changed, I played with a couple domains I wasn't using for anything important, to see if I could fix this.

https://www.hover.com/nameservers - on this page, hovering over each domain name, there was an option to "revert to hover default". Once that change occurred, I was then able to input the appropriate nameservers for my new webhost.

I thought the info might help others who come across this rather strange problem, and to make hover.com aware of the behavior, there might be something that can be tweaked to make the practice of changing nameservers a little less confusing. :)

Hi Alexandra,

I was able to find your account and can see which domain had the changes made to it.  As long as you're pointing your domain to those servers, that's all that needs to be done on our side.  Is there any possibility that the DNS on those AWS servers is not correct, or possible changed?  If you don't see the new website loading withing 48 hours of the name server changes, please check to be sure the servers are correct, then give your hosting provider a quick call to make sure everything on their end is set up and configured correctly.  If you still have any issues, give us a call (1-866-731-6556, Mon-Fri 8am-8pm EST) or send us an email at help@hover.com.  We'll see if there's anything further we can help with on our side.

As far as I understand if I want to point the domain harmonconsultancy.co.uk to the hosting server I just need to change the name server. Or, do I need extra steps? The site goes on and off, meaning sometimes I see the real site, and then 20 minutes later I see the Hover page with the message: "This user has not enabled any redirections." Hope you can help.

Hey Garfield, it can be a nameserver change or the addition of an A record/CNAME record to point to your hosting provider. In any case, the reason why you're seeing the bounce is due to propagation. It can take up to 24 hours for nameserver changes to take full effect. You should now only see your active website when visiting harmonconsultancy.co.uk, not the Hover default landing page. If you are still seeing the Hover page, then it may benefit you to clear your browser cache and cookies. If you still have any issues, give us a call (1-866-731-6556, Mon-Fri 8am-8pm EST) or send us an email at help@hover.com.

Hi John,

You can change the name server back the same way you changed it the first time: 1) under the Name Servers tab in your account, or 2) under the "Domain "Details" of the domain.  You'll have to contact your website hosting provider though if you need to recover any lost website data or if you don't remember what servers your domain was pointing to prior to this change.
